I have to admit, it does. I really would adopt a character that is in high quality versus one In a lower quality ovo

like sometimes i find the art on the ref too cute to not buy huehue;;
but, thankfully, i did connect to those characters ahaha [actually, some are my mains!]

also if the reference was really messy then i wouldn't really want the character?

It may do, although it's more depending on how clearly the design is shown. I have nothing against linearts and adoptable sheets, in fact they're often very good in showing off the design as that's what they're there for. So ultimately it does come down to design, not art, but as you said I will be willing to pay more for a character with custom lines etc c:
