I feel like items make a character a character, so I like items, though design also matters <3

Honestly depends.
Items that are important to the character are nice, but if they're just randomly there then no.
Designs also matter a lot to me.

Accessories are often a huge deal to me. Some of my favorite characters I love BECAUSE of their accessories
Tecmessa for example is one of my most prized characters now but if she didn't have those accessories I wouldn't want her because I really am not into plain dog designs. Her accessories though have I am guessing been the inspiration of her name (backseat owned her first and named her) they are partially the inspiration for her back story for me, as well as her personality

Zaroff's skull mask is what makes his design for me, I refuse to design what is under the mask because well his mask is a part of his character period

in Akira for me the mask and beads are essential in her design, at the very least her mask. The mask gets to hold a story for her and is well one of her most detailed parts really, the mask has the pattern which makes her unique

Take away Avril's accessories and you have a plain old pink tiger, not that exciting.

Don't get me wrong I love designs to but accessories allow a plain body or real life species to be different and unique

I'm actually picky with both. If a character I adopt comes with accessories, I try to develop them around that and their personality. If they don't come with accessories and I'm allowed to, I would just add some fitting ones to develop them with.

I tried out for Misaki because I absolutely love her markings and colors. Especially her chest marking and those mixing tail stripes. <3
Besides those two markings, my other favorite thing about her has to be the eyes. It's a very bright and contrasting green against the body, making it pop out more. Her accessories were a definite plus with her overall design.
