Currently I am breeding a mix of Quarter Horses, Paints, and Appaloosas. I do this because it's fun for me so I get enjoyment out of it. That really helps, if you enjoy it, it makes it a lot more fun (and it seems easier too) to play!
I've bred both Hanoverians and TB's on both UK and International. I just rather like both breeds and i tend to find them rather easy to BLUP too. But yeah, i switch breeds all the time, lol- especially when art updates are done. Though on both versions i still breed my original foundation breeds.
(Akhal-Teke and Appaloosa) Oooo, that sounds like an interesting mix. What is their skill set and GP? And yeah, the whole point of playing a game is to enjoy it, so do something you like.

Equally however, I steered clear of the TBs and arabs precisely because they're such popular breeds; as Polly mentioned already; you'll have a hard time making money off them unless you can get into the elite breeders groups asap.
I personally breed KWPNs at a leisurely rate and am hugely content with plodding along with them haha.
Oh yeah, new breeds are a nightmare to get started, because you need the money/passes to chuck at them in order to progress. Wheras with older breeds you can buy a cheap lowish GP mare, breed her to a nice high GP stallion and the GP jump in the foal can be huge! Yeah- they are very difficult to sell- i ended up selling my unwanted Arabians to a friend as i couldn't be bothered to try and sell them. xD And getting into the elite breeder groups is nigh on impossible unless you are an avid pass buyer.
I just joined a KWPN breeding group on UK and that's going okay. I was never really interested in the breed before, but they are nice- not proving very easy to BLUP mind. xD And i am doing the same with my Connies. I adore the artwork they updated them to a while back, so i started breeding them and i am loving it.

I bought a mare and stallion as foals when i started and the mare died the other day and i was so sad.
