I tend to look at the dates. A few months older than the pet you're giving is a trade up.
I usually creep on my trade ups, one month older than what I'm giving, and eventually I get somewhere.
I don't ask for wishlist either, nor do I offer it. 'Tis better to not be biased when trading up.
