Oh my...where do I start with this?
I really like a lot of characters in snk, some more, some less, but my favorite have to be Levi and Eren.
Eren and Levi are really some of the most misunderstood characters in the series. It actually pains my soul to see people mischaracterizing them like this. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion and if they see that then there's nothing I can do but if you look at the exterior and how they appear most of the time, I'm sorry but you are wrong.
So shall I break this in two sections? Yeah, I'll do that. [kinds spoilers if you haven't finished the anime?]
Eren is usually associated with anger, rage, being a monster, even a sociopath(though he might be a bit of that in terms of guilt).
However, Eren is more than that. He cares about his comrades and his friends as we've seen countless times. When the female titan was killing the soldiers while pursuing Eren you could see the terror in his face. Does that look to you like someone who doesn't care? Moreover, at the trial when they accuse Mikasa of being a titan as well he gets all defensive of her. He doesn't want her involved and he wants to protect her. Eren is alright with being the one to face the wrath of the world as long as everyone else is alright. We can also see how much Eren cares for his friends when in ep. 5, Armin is about to get eaten, even though he is severely injured, bleeding from his head and even missing a leg he stands up and fights. Not only for him and his dream to be free and see the outside world but also for his friend.
Eren, from a very young age had a really strong sense of justice. When he killed Mikasa's kidnappers, he didn't do it just because they were some kind of animals and they were wrong, he did it for Mikasa, he did it out of empathy for her.
In addition, Eren was turned in the thing he hates the most, a titan. No one asked him if he wanted to be a monster (though I very much think he is more of a human than a monster (at the moment at least)). At first, when he is asked to seal the gate and loses control right after he turns, it's because he is in denial. He doesn't want to be a titan, he doesn't want to be the enemy of mankind. But later on, he learn to accept this nature of his and use it for the 'greater' good.
What I admire the most about Eren is, well his most well-known traits, his sheer determination and passion. No matter what happens, no matter how bad he is injured he'll never stop until he achieves his goal, his dreams. Like I mentioned above, when he saves Armin after he has his leg bitten off and also (only on anime) despite having a pole pierced right through his shoulder, he doesn't give up are some very good examples.
Similarly, Levi, is more than a clean freak with thug vocabulary. He, like Eren, cares about his comrades. We all know how much he hates pointless deaths and not few are the timed we are shown this in both manga and anime. In the anime, even though an additional scene, he gives the badge he got from HIS squad to a soldier, not just because he doesn't have any use for it but because he cares. Moreover, we all know how much he hates getting his hands dirty and in ep 13 before the return to the Walls and he immediately takes out a napkin in order to wipe off titan blood, which EVAPORATES, but then when his comrade is dying he is comforting him in his final moments and he doesn't hesitate to hold his blood-covered hand. In addition to that, when his squad dies, he seems so expressionless but he is screaming inside, something that becomes more obvious when Petra's father comes to him. And then in the latest chapter his expression is just...it pains me so much. Plus after that he tries to comfort Eren who thinks it was his fault everyone died.
He will protect the others as much as he can, like he did with Mikasa and Eren. Not sure if this counts since he is in charge of Eren and he has to protect him as all costs but he could as well use Mikasa as bait in order to save Eren from the female titan or even attack her but he chose to save Mikasa as well. because he cares uwu
Levi, not as obvious as Eren, wishes to see the outside world and live in it. He told Eren in a chapter (I'm sorry, I can't remember this one but I believe it is 53-54) 'You too can see that this world is rotten' and that when they are going outside they feel free. Levi never opened this much to others. We see him commenting here and there but we never saw him actually speaking of himself and his thoughts (except that one time when he was 'teaching' Eren about the decisions they make).
Also, did I mention how badass he is? Yeah, Levi is [censored] awesome!
[TL;DR]In conclusion, the character development is great throughout the series and you can see(hopefully) what I like about these characters. Eren is passionate and has a clear goal, he knows what he wants and he does his best even though it might not succeed but he won't give up. Levi is caring and also has a dream to follow. They are strong, not only physically but also mentally. Both characters are so caring about the others and if it means that the rest won't suffer then they are ready to throw themselves in the battlefield. However, they are not invincible and most of all they are human.
Oh wow, this turned more into a character analysis than why I simply like the characters, sorry T_T
ALSO sorry this is soooo long ;^;
