Alert on Arlert!
The second Snk opening is a fantastic thing - not only in terms of animation , music and direction but also because of all the little hidden things and meanings incorporated into it. Looking closely and after the recent manga chapters, the hints become more and more clear. Such as the thing with Armin.
This candle shot was something unsettling from the very beginning - after chapter 55 it has become even more of that. It’s obvious that the candles are symbolic in the sense of representing lives of people. Only one candle remains after Armin’s agressive look - which could hint at his possible developement. That single candle may represent his own life and how he’ll become the type of person to go through corpses to remain the one alive. As someone noted before in a thread here on tumblr - the blood on his clothes is probably human blood, since the titan blood evaporates almost immediately. The look on his face seems like pure satisfaction. It creeps me out, really.
Judging from this and the recent chapter, there might await us a really unpleasant plottwist, where Armin will be forced to choose whether to throw away his own humanity and his bonds to Mikasa , Eren and the rest of the gang in order to either survive or become a self-proclaimed saviour, siding with probably the nobles or group of people who have a warped sense of justice.
I am really enjoying how this show puts all the twists and hints, although I really feel confused in one way or another. If I’d give credits to anything in this show/manga - it’s how perfectly imperfect all the human beings are. Starting out from Eren’s sociopathic attacks, Mikasa’s agressive devotion, Hanji’s weird torture/caring-ish attitude… to all the other side characters, like priest Nick or Sanes - who each have their own beliefs what is best for mankind and one can’t help but sympathize with them to some extent, since they make horrible mistakes without actually knowing it or doing it intentionally.
One hing that I am absolutely sure of though is - the statement that Armin was so proud to say - about becoming a monster in order to beat a bigger monster - is just something that only makes the characters run in horryfying bloody circles.
His talk with Jean in the last episode puts it perfectly clearly:
Jean:”It’s impossible for me to understand. Abandon your humanity in order to overcome a monster. That’s the only way to win?
Armin:It’s one possible way that humanity might defeat the titans. I think Eren might be able to do it.
Jean:Tell me….even if he did become that monster and defeated all the titans…would that really be a victory to humanity?
Some deep things you say there, Jean.
