But yeah, John isn't dead because in the most recent update Jade says:
JADE: i am still trying to locate my brother
JADE: but im having trouble picking up his scent
JADE: hes using his windy powers to obscure the trail and its giving me fits
So we know for sure he's not dead otherwise Jade won't be searching for him 8)

yepyep.Actually i think that on the homestuck subreddit they managed to make all of Rose's glitchy writing from her conversation with Dave legible and it said something along the lines of John being alive and attempting to trick Jade(?!)

I don't know if you saw, but Jade hasn't found him yet. He's been covering his trails so she obviously doesn't have him and he most likely is alive.
