Hello! Very long time, no see. 0_0 But now I have stuff to talk about.
So, Friday I went WHALE WATCHING off the coast of Washington, in the
San Juan Islands. We were going to see orcas, my favorite. <3 There were 2 main pods, J-Pod and K-Pod. Anyways. The day started out slow, but we DID see a Harbor Seal swimming aorund the docks! So, me and my family boarded the boat. We set out, and all we saw for the first 2.5 hours was pine-covered, hilly,
islands, some harbor porpoises [VERY briefly], and a LOT of fog. Really, a lot. We couldn't see anything! If there was a whale right there under our noses we wouldn't be able to see it.
So, halfway into our trip, we were all feeling a little discouraged. All the sudden, the boat attendant or whatever announced there was a whale approaching. SHe had been working with this specific whale watching touring business for 6 years, and she could tell all the whales apart by their
saddle patch! Amazing, huh? Anyways, the Orca slowly approaching in the fog was Cookie. He was young, but old enough to be away from his mother, Oreo. He was pretty small however. He passed by, right in front of the boat, his dorsal fin making an appearance over the surface.
This was the best picture I got of Cookie, he's the little black dot on the bottom, lol. All the rest were just fog. xD
Alright, so Cookie passed by, and then faded out of view. We moved on.
Not that long after we saw Cookie, we saw him again! But not just him, his whole family too! Oreo, his mother, Rhapsody, his *adopted* [yes, adopted] sister, and himself. These whales form the J-Pod. Anyways. Miraculously,
the fog lifted, revealing the orca's backs as they effortlessly let their dorsal fins poke out of the surface. The sun glistened off their backs, and it was beautiful. More so in person than on my camera, I couldn't get a really good picture, but
here's the best one I got. It was so awesome.
Alright, so by then we were heading back to th e docks. But not before passing through the islands that surrounded the tip of the bigger Lopez Islands.
It.
Was.
Gorgeous. nto only did we see awesome scenery, but we saw a
SEA LION. So cute! He was taking a
nap on an island.
So, after that, we made our way back to the dock. What an awesome day!
