I found a character that I wanted, but then it was bought, and now I found another...that's still out of my reach

Deadman's Charade, why is it a bad idea? I only co-own one character but haven't had any issue with him, so I'd be interested to hear about your experiences with character co-owning.

And I tried co-owning a character that I knew I wouldn't use, I told the person to go wild with him...
THEY SOLD HIM.
And the new owner started drawing him in inappropriate ways that I was forced to report them.

o.o Suffice to say, I've never co-owned a character since.

What's the best way to approach a character cleanout?
2013 was the best way for me to do it. New year = new start.
I realized that I had tons of character that never really saw the light of day, and I felt bad for them. I'm a design hoarder, I will admit that. But I decided that it's time for me to stop being a hoarder and let others enjoy the characters.
How do you motivate yourself to have one?
I said to myself, Moz, you're having a cleanout. You're only going to keep 18 characters, because my favorite number is 9, and 1+8=9. I was strict with myself, not allowing anything to bypass my 'self-inflicted rules'. Don't keep character you never use, don't make excuses because the might have 'sentimental value'. Do it, and don't stop.
How do you choose who to say goodbye to?
Simple, I only keep the ones I truly love and take care of. The rest might be hard to say goodbye to, but I know they are going to good homes.
Is it a good idea to co-own the ones you won't use but can't let go?

Thanks for all the responses guys, it's really helpful. Once I finish up some stuff with some of my characters I will try and go through them, that rating idea sounds like it might work really well Foxtrot. I want to finish my planned breedings first, so I can choose which ones of them to keep. I worry I will feel bad breaking up the family though :c

Once or twice... And what they wanted? Real money. I don't pay real money for chars. Or Rares list pets... Like Main rares list, around a BE Galaxy for one char no art .3. (<~ True story)
