I could be wrong, but I believe they involved themselves separately. I think they wanted certain things on the phone for themselves. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

Hey guys have any of you ever noticed that, when ever it's anyone else in danger 9for the most part0 Sherlock acts like he couldn't care less, but when ever John is in danger or anything Sherlock automatically freaks out and will do anything, just to keep him safe? ((Especially Reichenbach Fall, oh the feels!))

Don't attack me but I don't ship Johnlock so perhaps it's because Sherlock knows that John would do the same for him? And also maybe he doesn't want to lose his only friend.
