Okay, i want to just step in and tell you something i found out.....

You remember in Carpet Diem when they found the room, and Stan took those glasses? And there was a calender flipped to July of 1982.
Gravity Falls takes place in 2012.

1982 is exactly 30 years ago from 2012.... o3o
.....and we've been hearing that something obviously happened 30 years ago. So whatever happened then is the day that calender was left on.
I have no clue yet of what happened, but something happened 30 years ago with the portal and that calender was left on that day.

Remember the episode with Stan's bunker? Those people said 'They haven't had readings like this in thirty years.' Obviously something horrible happened on that day that Stan's recreating.
I have the theme song stuck in my head O3O I can whistle the entire song. And i'm a sucker for animated stuff and idk why.

This is just a theory, but one of them could've done the portal and something went wrong, I don't know, I'm usually good with decoding, not on this one though.

I believe the author hid the books so no one could use them to make the portal, maybe it's because of in the past, someone used the portal and something awful happened.
