The breeding #s are lifetime for the Wyrm.
You can get extra breedings by winning contests and such.
Otherwise, you can always get more Wyrms.

From the PoV of someone who has a bunch of Wyrms and gives out lots of breedings, I really haven't had to be stingy. You usually won't run out of breedings in the regular course of a year unless you have some rare type or do a ton of breedings. And honestly, you can always pick and choose who you want to give breedings to.
