I mean I know she popular but she is just a toy...

It's a bit more than that, at least in my eyes. Just think, for a moment, what it took to get the Derpy toy. This was a random design used to fill in space, and an animator happened to give her a funny face that was supposed to be hidden by another pony anyway. Instead, it was visible. It got people laughing, talking, sharing the show, and... well, look at where that's led. The fans gave that pony a name, a job, a family, a rather large group of friends... and rather than ignore all of that, the parent company embraced it. Yes, a fair bit of the motivation is probably just money. But it's still something that's just really rare to see from companies, especially when it involves a demographic so far out of their usual target crowd.

Derpy isn't really just a toy, she's more or less become a symbol of the fandom and just how it's grown, changed, and interacted with the company behind it all.
