hello CAC family! one Palentine's and another opens!
in this event, you will answer a prompt for the clan of your choosing and also tell me one of your favorite pairings (OC/canon/fanon/anyone of any fandom) and you'll receive two cats based off of the characters! they will come to your clan as mates/partners!
in order to enter you must have had your clan founded and posted within the last 30 days of the clan you are wanting the kitties to go to. you can only pick one clan.

With Riverside Familiar Academy having only just been established, it was a little too early to be considering matters of romance. In spite of this, Altocumulus had made some considerations for what she would do when it inevitably does happen, thanks to Halo making a remark about it.

Altocumulus’s understanding of how romance happens is very limited, but as far as she could tell, relationships tended to distract people from their jobs, often to an unacceptable degree. She could only assume that the same will go for learning, teaching, hunting, and whatever else the members of RFA will have to do. That was far from ideal - after all, each familiar only has until their bonded human graduates to learn magic in RFA, and Altocumulus didn’t want anyone to be wasting time and effort on relationships. She would much rather they focus on learning, free of any and all distractions.

However, Altocumulus can also admit that this is highly unrealistic. No familiar, or human for that matter, can be doing their job or studying all the time, and leisure is always necessary. Attempting to prevent any romance from happening is also very unlikely to succeed. Emotions are difficult to control, and regardless of rules, relationships and such are bound to happen. It would be much more practical for Altocumulus to spare herself the effort and just allow any romance to happen without intervening.

In the same vein, Altocumulus doesn’t care enough to specifically obstruct romance with familiars - or just cats - outside of RFA. They were only an academy, at the end of the day, and asking students to restrict their entire life to its “walls” was an absurd notion. Of course, anyone involved in the latter should be aware of the potential heartbreak from dating someone with a much shorter lifespan than their own.

Since RFA is made up of familiars from around the world, any courting will likely depend on the individual. With the river leviathans and lesser dragons living nearby, Altocumulus thinks it’s possible that some familiars will try to hunt a baby river leviathan to show off their strength, or steal a lesser dragon egg to showcase their stealth. Whatever the case, she hopes that no one will rush into it carelessly. Maybe she could even convince future students that showing off really difficult magic will be a good way to court others, and thus encourage them to learn tough spells?

Altocumulus had heard that some schools had locations that the student populace designate as “romantic” and often go to confess. Maybe RFA will have something similar in the future? There is certainly some interesting flora in the surrounding area, and maybe some familiars will arbitrarily decide that a particular one serves as a beautiful backdrop to a declaration of love. Or, hopefully, they will find a particular spell pretty and start using it to enhance the atmosphere of their confession. If they use their motivation to confess to learn more magic, Altocumulus may even graciously spare them any grumbling about romance being a distraction!

the original swellclan had several traditions that the rebuilt clan will be implementing as well. courting in general is a pretty casual endeavor. many romances start out in the apprentice's den where first loves are often formed during training and growing up together. apprentice couples are obviously not allowed to become mates, but often go on dates and share similar behaviors to older cats such as eating together as a couple or going for walks on their days off. some of these romances last into adulthood, but most never get serious enough and eventually fizzle out by the time they get their warrior names. adult courting is much more serious, though still pretty relaxed when it comes to customs. most couples begin by sharing food. this is a custom that is seen as emotionally intimate and only really happens between family, close friends, or couples. that's usually the first step in the courting process. they will then start spending time together on their days off/when they are not on duty. going on walks through the territory is an extremely popular pastime between clanmates and offers a way to get to know other cats in a casual way. besides that, cats will also go swimming in the creek or sun themselves on the rocks nearby on good days. most activities during the initial courting period focus on simply getting to know each other. if any 'breakups' happen, this is the most popular time that it happens, as there's no real commitment and not a lot of investment beyond friendship at this point. breakups after becoming official mates is rare, as the cats of swellclan have loyalty as their primary value. it is emphasized that mateships are a serious commitment and that breakups after mateship, unless something specific happens, are looked down upon as a sign of a cat's immaturity. because of this, most cats don't become mates until they are well into their warriorship. many cats will not take a mate at all. some do not want the full commitment, are happy being casual partners, or simply prefer being alone. it's also not taboo to have kits outside of a mateship. as long as the parents of the kits are willing to take the commitment of raising a litter, they do not have to be mated together. outside mateships and flings are not looked down upon, but some gossip might occur if a cat has multiple flings with multiple cats they barely know. once a couple has decided to become official mates, they must wait until the next aurora borealis festival for the mateship ceremony. during the festival, couples will be 'offered up' to the ancestors to ask for their blessing and the couple exchange vows underneath the lights. after this ceremony, the two (or more) cats are seen as eternally linked and will be promised to remain together in this life and the afterlife. life as a mated pair doesn't really change much, other than not being the subject of gossip when they go hunting together or spend a night away from camp out in the territory by themselves. when it comes to kits, the only real tradition is the naming tradition, that all cats of swellclan must do before they have kits. this is when the birthing parent takes a vigil the moon before they are due to give birth, most of the times by themselves, though the kits' other parent/a family member often checks on them throughout the night to make sure they're okay. during the vigil, they sit under the stars and offer prayers to the ancestors for the safety of the arrival of the kittens. they also are quiet and observant of their surroundings, as anything they see during this vigil is usually what the kits are named after. for example, if the night is stormy during their vigil, the kits may be named after weather. or if there is a whale that is seen, the kit may be named whalekit. this is the traditional naming method and while the vigil is necessary (barring medical conditions, in which case they may do the vigil assisted with the medic or for a shorter period of time), the names do not always have to be related to the vigil especially in current times. overall, the process of love is a casual process in swellclan, but there are certain pastime activities that have a romantic connotation. and while mateships are not necessary to have a family or to bea couple with a cat, those who want to take their vows will be spiritually linked by the ancestors to spend the rest of eternity together.

Like many things in the Faeriecats lives, Courtship is done quickly and secretively. The group is still navigating how to merge old traditions made from necessity with the new, less dangerous lifestyle.

Before the founding of the group, courtship primarily happened in the snatches of time between hunting and being hunted. Less about grand sweeping romances and more about ensuring your
partner survives until your kits are old enough to look after themselves. Mates would nest together, often hunting separately to maximise potential. You might only find out that they died when they do not return.

Within the group, not enough seasons have yet passed for cats to have drawn together. As far as we know. Courtship and love is not shouted from the treetops, but whispered directly to your partner. The only outward signs of a budding courtship (before kittens are announced) would be spending more time together. Sharing a meal together in the evenings; wishing each other good luck on patrol; perhaps sneaking into a tunnel to sit and eat alone together. It is considered polite to ignore it if you think two cats are courting - to speak it aloud might bring it to the attention of things that wish a burgeoning relationship harm.

The most important part of a courtship is sharing your True Name with your partner. Not all cats will feel comfortable even doing this, sometimes at odds with the timeline of their partner. It does represent a great deal of trust in them: your Name can be used to control and harm you, and sharing it is a sign that you trust that they will mean you no harm.
