@Canada, I'm in the same boat, I'd rather write than code. Mostly because I don't know anything about coding.
But I won't learn unless I do it, but I won't do it unless I'm good at it and I won't get good unless I learn.
has roleplaying/writing helped you in any way academically?
Yes. Writing and reading has helped me in so many ways it would be impossible to begin where they have helped me.
But, unlike many, I see roleplaying as something of a waste of time. You have to get on every day and ask for updates and keep up with everything.
Its fine with two or three people, but in groups its such a hassle.

i'm good for a while and then (usually) out
of the blue, bam! no muse. and sometimes
i'm still into the rp and want to continue, but
my muse is like "lol nope" and the rp dies. ;o;
occasionally i can get my muse back.

So far I haven't left a single roleplay, as I tend to use my posts in a way that they add more plot, when there is none. People most often bail on me when it comes to roleplays and it's usually without a response.
Has roleplaying/writing helped you in any way academically?
It has actually. In all ways that you'd expect it to. It has tremendously helped me with improving my grammar and spelling, including the fact that my vocabulary is richer everyday. Although english is not my first language it slowly is becoming perhaps a substitute to my first language, as I am going to a international school where most classes actually are in english.
