My vote's on Kaede, no question. I had to back off from the game for like a week after she died.

Oh easily. Shuichi's okay, don't get me wrong, but Kaede is so much more compelling and likable imo.
The twist involving her is really clever and well-executed, but part of me really wishes they'd just kept her as the main protagonist.
She's so sweet and empathetic, even despite everything. My girl deserved better.
