Vampire inspired. The cheek pouch holds a numbing agent emitted by its second set of fangs to stun live prey. It is half blind from a fight, either with a bear or a wolf as this character is about wolf-sized. Something along those lines at least. This is an omnivore and gets most of its nutrition from fruit juice and some animal blood, but it does eat meat, berries/fruit, herbs and some vegetables.
I know the side ref looks a little weird but I wanted to give you the color of their gums as well because they are a semi-vicious character. Two of their jewels (which don't do anything special just looked cool so I kept them) were also torn free in the fight that made them half blind, hence the deep cavern in their cheek that the second scar runs through.
