Short Story:
(She was named after my friend's rat, btw.)
I sat snuggled into my Mama's side. We were laying in The Warm Fuzzies, as we call it. It was basically a ball of warm, fluffy stuff, but I loved sitting in it.
"Two!" My brother called. That was my 'shout name'. We get shout names (usually they're just numbers) from mama or daddy just so they know how to get our attention. Then we get real names from our owner when we're adopted. The brother that was calling me was Four. I had two other brothers, One and Three.
"Two, wanna play hide and seek with One, Three, and me?" he asked. I yawned and stood up. I stretched and then smiled at Four. "Sure." I said. "Who's it?" i asked as One and Three scampered over. Me, One, and Four smiled and laughed. "Three!" we all said before running off to a hiding place. "What?!" Three complained. But he sighed and covered his eyes. "I'm always it." he grumbled. "ONE! TWO! THREE!..."
Our cage is great for hide and seek. It's full of toys, hammocks, tubes, it even has four levels. The bottom level has wood shavings covering the bottom, and has The Warm Fuzzies, a Snuggle Box, which is basically just a wooden box with Warm Fuzzies in it, and the Bathroom corner. The next level up has the bowls with out food in it, our water bottle, and a few hiding places. The next floor is filled with toys and stuff, and the top floor has three hammocks hanging from the ceiling, plus more toys on the ground.
I went straight to the top floor to hide. I climbed into one of the hammocks and smiled as I cuddled into the warm blanket. The hammocks were technically for ferrets, but they're so snuggly, and we don't complain. I sat there quietly, waiting for Three, when I heard a voice.
"Oh, daddy, they are so cute!" the voice squealed. My eyes shot open and I became intensely still. It was a human. And all humans do are take us away. One had almost taken home One the day before, but they had settled on a hamster instead.
"Oooohhh, daddy, look at this black and white one! It's so adorable!" she gushed. I knew she was looking at Four, so I quickly got out of the hammock and made a dash for the bottom floor where I could hide with Mama in the Snuggle Box.
"Ohhhh, the calico one is so sweet!" the voice said. I ran past Four, who was doing the same thing as me. We gave each other a worried look. One was being looked at now. We kept running, and we made it to the second floor.
"The little white one is lovely!" she said as One joined us on our run. As we were running to the ramp down to the bottom floor, I tripped over something. I fell flat on my face, and One and Four didn't notice. I managed to see them join Three as he scampered into the Snuggle Box. I started to get up, when I froze in terror. One large, chocolate-brown eye spotted me through the bars of the cage.
"Oh my gosh! Daddy, look at this little tiny one! It's so small and beautiful! Daddy, can I please get her?" she said. I just stood there in fear, not sure of what to do.
Another eye appeared, a similar colour to the first, but bigger. I heard a sigh. "Alright, Wrennie. But you better take good care of her."
"Oh, I will!" she promised. And they disappeared.
I took the chance to run down into the Snuggle Box. Mama was there, calming my brothers. When I came in, she took me in her paws and hugged me close. Daddy couldn't fit in the box with us, but he reached in to stroke my ears. My brothers nuzzled my legs as the realization settled in; I was leaving.
A few minutes later, the pet store owner came over to our cage with a cardboard box. "Which one do you want, Miss?" he asked.
"It's white and has a tan patch on the back with a couple tiny grey spots, too..." she said.
"Oh, the little tiny one? That's the only girl in the litter, just so you know." The girl laughed.
"Oh good! I was hoping it was a girl!" she said.
The store owner made the noises that he made when he fed us, and I sighed. I hugged all my family members once more, and then crawled out of the Snuggle Box. There was already a hand waiting, asking to hold me. I climbed on like I always do, but I figured it would be the last time I ever climbed on the store owner's hand. He placed me in a box and closed the lid.
It was really dark inside the box. I was very afraid; who knew what else was in that box?! I managed to find a corner, and I sat there quietly while the box rocked, bumped, and shook. After a while, the box bumped less frequently, so I closed my eyes, and dreamed of being home with my family...
When I opened my eyes, I was still in the box, but the movement was choppy again. After another little while, the box opened and light flooded in. I squinted my eyes until I got used to the brightness. A small, warm, soft hand stroked the top of my head and back. A little girl with long, black hair that went to about her waist was smiling at me with perfect, white teeth. It was the person with the chocolate eyes. She had a kind face, and I wasn't afraid of her. Well, less afraid.
After a few minutes, another voice, one that i knew from earlier, said "Alright, Wren. The cage is all set up. You can put her in."
The little girl, Wren, reached in and gently lifted me out. She set me into a cage, and even though it wasn't as nice as my cage at the store, it was awfully nice. There was a litterbox in the corner just like the one at the store. And there was a Snuggle Box, which i discovered was full of Warm Fuzzies. There were a bunch of blocks in the middle that were light enough for me to move, but strong enough for me to sit on. And on one side on all the boxes, it was open, so I could sit inside them.
There were a bunch of tubes for me to crawl through, and a wheel on the side. And yes, I know that wheels are more a hamster thing, but I can't help it. I love wheels. There was even a hammock hanging from the ceiling that I could climb into using the blocks.
There were a bucnh of other toys, too, along with a food bowl full of the food from the pet store, and a water bottle. It was perfect, even though I was by myself.
The little girl, Wren smiled at me again. I squeaked at her to tell her I was happy and she smiled.
"Hello, there. My name is Wren. I hope you like your new home, Kitty Rat." she said. "That's what I'm calling you." she explained to me. I smiled to myself. I didn't have a shout name anymore. I wasn't Two; I was Kitty. And hey, it's not the best name in the world, but it's better than my shout name. And hey, it's creative.
So that was the beginning of my life with Wren. And the best part of the story, is that it's not the end~
I hope that was good enough. Not that I need any more characters, but that baby rat was so darned cute. n___n ~<3
