Short story: Kull use to be a small runt in a litter. He stumbled out of the cave as a runt, getting lost after a couple of months of his birth. Being a runt, his mom and dad left him to figure out what he was to them.
Nothing. He stumbled out into the forest, magic radiating from every living thing around him. The small animals that would fear what he was. Aura and such. The trees and flowers radiated with life. The difference between him and the world. He was born without magic.
All the magic in the world is born in everyone. Natural magic called Aura magic and human magic. There isn't much aura magic since the humans tainted it with their own blend of magic. The human's magic is a magic that steals from aura magic. Any animal that crosses with a human may have the magic ripped out of them. His mother warned them once.
Never get too close to humans.
Kull didn't care anymore as his paw tripped a wire that pulled a net up around him, a bell ringing for the trapper. He whimpered as his legs were hopelessly entangled in the net. A small boy with an odd-looking knife held in his hand appeared. Kull's eyes widened in fear as he struggled against the net. The boy walked over to the rope that held Ayddin up. The boy cut the rope, dropping Kull in the netting to the forest floor. Kull tried to back up away from the human boy, watching him warily.
You got your wish mom, he thought. The boy picked up Kull and carried him, slung over his shoulder. Kull whimpered as the boy carried him back to a village, just outside the forest.
Kull looked around. The villagers looked poor and hungry. Their clothes were ripped, some were as thin as sticks. Ayddin's gaze dropped. The boy walked over to a storage-looking place with cages. Kull's eyes widened as he struggled more.
"Calm down pup, or I'll have to hurt you." Ayddin didn't listen. He kept up the struggle.
The boy gave a loud sigh as he pulled out his odd-looking knife and slashed against his side, inbetween his ribs. Kull grounded his teeth as blood came out of his side. The boy's eyes widen."You..." Kull growled but the blood loss was draining him. The boy picked up the netting and opened a cage, opening the netting and dropping him into it. The last thing Kull saw were a pair of green eyes as he fell into unconsciousness.
"Hey... Are you ok?" A small voice asked. It was shy to his ears as he slowly opened his eyes. In front of him was a yellow pup with long ears and a pair of startling green eyes. "Are you ok?" she repeated. He nodded slowly as he tried to stand up. She put a paw on his shoulder to stop him and lay him back down. "I wouldn't move... I could only heal you on the surface..."
"Who..." She smiled.
"My name is Maiirra." She nuzzled him gently to lay him down. He was about to say his name when she stopped him. "Please... Don't tell me your name."
"Why?" Her smile faltered.
"That would be a sad way for me to say goodbye..."
"What..? Why...?" She looked at him solemnly.
"Tonight... will be my last, my brave one."
"What..." She turned away and went to her own corner of the cage. He got up slowly, wincing and he stumbled over to her. "Maiirra..." He set his head on her shoulder. She looked down at him. "What will happen to you...?"
"I..."
"Maiirra..." She looked ahead, dropping her eye contact from his.
"I'm one of the last of us that is full of aura magic. The humans will rip that last bit to forge those knives and steal that last bit of magic from the natural world." Kull froze slightly. She licked his snout.
"I won't let it happen, Maiirra..." She looked at him.
"You can't prevent this, my brave one. It will come."
"Maiirra, you saved me. I return my debts."
"But..." He nuzzled her jaw shut.
"Please. I want to help you." He nuzzled into her neck.
She whispered "Alright... But you need to rest. You're not going to be able to help me the way you are right now." He shook his head slowly. She put all his weight on her as she steadied him to a spot, laying him down.
"Maiirra..." She shook her head to silence him, and curled around him.
"Just promise me one thing...."
He whispered, "Anything..." She nuzzled his head.
"If we make it, I want you to promise that you will give me your name..." He slowly closed his eyes.
"I promise..." And blackness overtook him.
"My brave one..." Ayddin's eyes slowly opened. Maiirra looked at him, concerned.
"Is it time...?" She shook her head.
"It's almost dusk..."
"How can you tell?" She looked distant. "Maiirra?"
"Hmm?"
"When are they coming?" She tilted her head to listen.
"A few minutes."
"What's the plan?" She looked at him worriedly, but dismissed it.
"They'll open that gate," She nodded her head to the top of the cage, "We need to jump up that way and run out the door."
Seemed simple enough, thought Kull. She uncurled from around him and stood up. He shakily got up. He felt so sore. She watched him. Kull stuffed his pain in the back of his mind and stood proudly. Her smile was encouraging as he sat down.
"Maiirra..."
"Yes?"
"How did you get here?" Her face turned grim against her pale yellow coat.
"I was taken from my family." She looked down. They they heard the footsteps of humans coming into the building and toward their cage. "Get ready."
He nodded and positioned himself, ready to jump.
"Only the yellow coated one." Maiirra must have steadied her nerves.
One of them came over and unlatched the cage. Maiirra jumped ahead of him, knocking the guy off his feet and yelled "Run!"
Kull jumped half-heartedly as the pain seared in his side. Maiirra started to run around the other guy, Kull right behind her. They were running past confused villagers as a pair of hands grabbed Maiirra.
Before Kull knew what was happening, the hunter slashed into poor Maiirra, blood and magic seeping from her. Her finally words were "Go... I'll see you again..." And her eyes finally shut after the last bit of magic drained from her.
Kull ran out of the village and into the forest. Till he came upon a cliff edge and collapsed, crying. "Maiirra!" He knew she wasn't there anymore. He continued to bawl. He lost the girl and it was the human's fault.
This lasted maybe an hour and a half. He scratched his face against the stump of a tree, the skin peeling off to the bone. He couldn't feel it. The pain of losing Maiirra was enough that he couldn't do anything. Until he finally sat up and looked at the night sky. The clouds had formed a distinct shape of Maiirra and the wind whispered her sweet voice into his ear.
Do not avenge me, love. I knew it was coming. But I will see you again. I love you."I love you too..." He whispered as her face disappeared in the clouds. Tears streamed down his face as he whispered his final words to her.
"My name...is
Kull."
