So going off what you said earlier (which I do really like!)
He could have lived in a small village on an island. Flying was a big hobby of his and he would do it every day. When war broke out his village was heavily affected, no one was hurt but everyone was nervous. Afraid that soldiers would come to their doors and demand things. Your character (I don't know their name so I'l refer to them as YC) would go on stealth flights at night to get supplies for everyone. One night while flying towards the mainland they were spotted, mistaken for a plane, and shot down.
