A pathetic looking old mutt lay on a slab of equally old and beaten driftwood that had been lodged up on the banks of the river after the large flood a decade or so ago. The dogs old and broken yellow stained teeth poked weaselly out of his slightly opened mouth, forgiving eyes staring into the darkness behind him. Fear was well beyond Old Mutt, he was wise and experienced in life and his old, fragile bones didn't fare too well as he was when he was young and didn't run like he used to. Few people visited Old Mutt, he hadn't been given a loving or memorable name and was known by the few caring humans as the offensive term 'Old Mutt'. The dog was humble with what he had got and was made up with a touch German Shepard and possibly a slice of Border Collie or husky dog but that wasn't certain. The old dog had a welcoming character to his personality and would have been the perfect family pet in his younger days, but now Old Mutt would rather sleep on his familiar lump of wood that had been his territory in his older, unforgiving years of living the life of broken hearted dog. His once deep and grabbing brown eyes had now faded to a soft greying brown and with it his eye-sight had shifted like the wind on a rainy day, his hearing wasn't much better but Old Mutt's nose was his savior and guided the old grey dog to food and water whenever he needed it.
Humble dreams filled Old Mutt's head at night, they were memories of running and playing in the daisy fields when he was younger and of chasing the Magpies that swooped wildly down from the tall pale Gumtrees. Old Mutt sighed heavily as the sound of something wandering around in the first light of dawn, he looked around with alert ears then dropped his head onto the soft grass. Dark ears twitched as a soft voice echoed through the trees, words that Old Mutt couldn't work out but the tone was soft and calm "Old Mutt, it's time to leave." boomed as soft but demanding voice, the old dog stood up slowly and replied depressingly but he knew it was time to go to the forever green fields above "Just take my spirit in the wind."
