and here is the story:



Her first memory was of being licked clean by her mother. Oh, the scent of her mother... It was wonderful.

"Do you think she'll make it?" a human girl said. Of course, the pup couldn't hear it. "She's so small."
"I hope so," a more masculine voice said.
The pup's mother whimpered worriedly, nudging her daughter gently.
The runt let out a little squeak. And another. Then she yawned.
The girl smiled. "At least she's good for now." She bent down to looked closer at the puppy. "Can I see her, honey?" she asked the mother.
The mother flicked back her ears and whined, but didn't make a move to defend the pups as the human reached for the little runt. She knew the drill.
The pup squeaked at she was put on a cold, hard surface. She remembered the feeling of it on her soft, new belly.
"Hmm," the male human sounded concerned. "She's not as heavy as the rest." He touched the pup's back at see if there was a reaction.
The pup's mouth opened and her legs trembled as she stretched underneath the pressure of his fingers.
"We should name her, especially if she... you know."
The female human sighed in both happiness and sadness. "Okay."
They both thought for quite a few moments. "Maybe something simple?" the man offered.
"Of course not! She deserves something beautiful."
The pup's mother stood from the rest of her puppies to check on her smallest one. She whimpered, looking up at the humans with pleading eyes, for her pup.
The girl plucked the pup form the metal surface and gently set her down on the blanket, where the mother returned to nurse all of her pups.
"Oh! I know! We should name her Bridgette. It means strength."

Before she surrendered to sleep, the female human visited the pups again. She gazed fondly upon Bridgette. "Be strong, little one. Be strong."
