So, I've been really into the THG series recently, and fell in love with Katniss' dress in Catching Fire. I found out what mockingbirds, not Jays, really look like, and as I walked around town, noticing magpies wings as they flew, I figured that they looked similar, with the white tips of the wings, that they vaguely resemble the Mockingjay Dress.
This bird is a mix between a magpie and a mockingjay, which is already a mix between a mockingbird and a Jabberjay. This bird still doesn't look too much like it would function in reality still, so I figured out and explanation, that a certain clutch of eggs from a Maggerjie contained a bird that was deformed, with weak legs and a smaller body, resulting in larger wings. The bird was surprisingly able to survive and function in the wild, and it bred to continue the species, and deformity.
Studies showed that this new Maggerjie couldn't walk or last too long on the ground, which is a problem since magpies, mockingbirds and bluejays are all ground foragers, but the bird still flew more often; And with it's large, powerful wings, the bird had some stamina, but it still took a lot of muscle power for the bird to flap it's wings. So, to help the birds out, they took a few specimens and GM'd them with Alpine Swifts, birds known to fly for the longest periods at a time, and Arctic Terns, birds known to fly the longest distances. This helped the Maggerjies out a lot, and now, the offical Maggerjie can fly for months on end without stopping during non-migration seasons, during migration season, the birds can fly for over a year.
