"Wildstar? Wildstar!"
She snapped out of her daze and looked at Cricketsong, who was staring at her with a look of vague concern. He shook his head and sighed.
"Meadowbreeze asked me to tell you that Whitesmoke ran into a badger on the territory." He paused as he saw Wildstar's alarm at the mention of her sister. "She wasn't hurt, but her leg got tangled pretty badly in brambles while she led it away."
Wildstar nodded faintly, her eyes searching for the snowy white she-cat. She smiled slightly as she saw her sister unharmed, being cared for by her own daughter. Goldenpaw was beginning to be an excellent medicine cat. She scanned the camp for Troutpaw and Specklepaw. They were by the camp's entrance together, wondering what the commotion was about.
Her eyes fell on every cat, from her elder parents sitting together like lovestruck apprentices to Gorsenose filling the fresh-kill pile, even to her best friend and her new kits. This was her clan, her domain. Everything she loved was here.
She stepped onto the high rock to address her clan, her blue eyes gleaming. But as she opened her mouth her mother's eyes snapped towards her.
"Wake up Wildpaw, it's time to patrol."
"Mother what are you talking about?"
A rough feeling like the world was shaking struck her, making her stomach roll. She staggered on the rock, then fell.
"Come on Wildpaw! We can't wait forever!" Gorsepaw said, exasperated as he jabbed her again with his large paw. The ginger and white apprenticed was dazed and confused, but the reality hit her. Being Wildstar was a dream. It was a saddening realization. Her brother was not her deputy, and her sister was far away along with her parents. She had no family, no friends. She got to her paws and headed out to go on the patrol.
