A deep red shape merged out of the fog, his large form blocking the path of the chestnut pelted she-wolf ((Azelma)). Ice blue eyes fixed onto her green orbs, their piercing stillness unnerving and eerie. Blood mingled with the red fur of his chest and arms, and he looked as if he had just lost a personal battle.
Zalmikku had never made it to the woods. The she-wolf he had carried had died in his arms, half way across the battle field. Her wounds were just too great. As he has stared into her deep brown eyes, another piece of his stone cold heart had died, and Zalmikku could not stay with her any longer. He could not watch her die. Setting her down by a fallen lycan, he had turned and walked away as the she-wolf closed her eyes for the last time. A tear for all the fallen threatened to fall from his orbs, but he pulled himself together with a choked grunt and quickened his pace for the sanctuary of the forest. He had to get out of this forsaken hell-hole. And, unwittingly, Zalmikku had stumbled upon this she-wolf’s path.
The red male had not fought beside his brethren in the battle. Having been in the dungeons at beginning of the battle, he had fought his way out of this stone prison, and then embarked upon a personal campaign to destroy his masters. Due to his solo actions, it was highly unlikely any of the survivors knew him, and he was not familiar with them either. Still, he was not one for teamwork and holding hands in daisy fields. He was a warrior, born and bred.
And yet, this chestnut pelted wolfess made him stop and look again. There was an innocence about her, a sense of compassion and thoughtfulness that her soft face exuded. The type who would make a good healer. The arrow was still stuck in Zal’s shoulder; he had not bothered yet to yank it out. He noticed a bump on her head, and her thumb looked painful. Without really realising what he was doing, Zalmikku reached out his paw, took hers and eased her crushed thumb away from the pad slightly. “Don’t clench your fist. Give the blood room to flow. It will heal faster,” he muttered gruffly, embarrassed and surprised by this unexpected assistance on his part. “And get out of here. The smoke alone is enough to attract the vampires, let alone all this stupid howling. They will be here soon, and they will show no mercy.”
