"But I wouldn't have," Gaara bellowed, a madness creeping into his eyes. "All I do is take, I can never give her what she needs! She can pretend to be okay with that, but she never would be. It'd kill her from the inside out. And that's something I can't do."
Kankuro gave his brother one of his rare penetrating gazes. "Kami, you're in love with her."
"No I'm not," Gaara protested. That was just insane. He was incapable of such feelings. His brother really was dimwitted.
"Then why do you care so much?" Kankuro leaned against the wall, smug when his younger brother had no answer. "That's what I thought."
