"What do you mean, vampires?" he said, frowning at her. She sighed.
"Sorry. i forgot you can't smell them. I'll have to show you how to pick them out in a crowd," she murmured, peering around curiously. To her annoyance, the halls were emptying out quickly. "Lesson number one," she purred, leading him down the hall--he followed her thoughtlessly. "Never let a pretty face distract, and don't trust the beautiful ones." He looked at their linked arms irritably. If this made girls start hitting on him again, he'd kill her. Well, he'd yell at her at least. He got the feeling even vampire hunters had a tough time with his self-appointed guardian.
"Arah, I'm pretty," he pointed out, somehow not sounding vain when he did. "Does that mean I shouldn't trust me?" She looked at him, opening her mouth to answer--then looked sharply forward, mouth still open. She winced just as he realized why, running into a very solid form. He rubbed his nose, muttering an "ow," then looked up to see who he'd run into. Arah's earlier warning rolled through his head as he looked at Gabriel, taking note that 'attraction' was not quite the right word for what he felt this close to Gabriel. It colored his cheeks even as he smiled apologetically at the other boy.
"Sorry," he said, dropping his hands and taking note that Arah had released him, though she was still standing uncomfortably close. He didn't get to see the irritated expression she had on--or that a flash of protectiveness rolled through her eyes as she sized up the other vampire. She relaxed after a moment as she realized he was well-fed; he wasn't about to hurt her little Jacky.
