Kat looked around, enjoying the sound of her almost silent footsteps having so much echo. She scanned the floor, walking over to the side, and picking something up between the two doors. It was a toy. A soft rabbit, with one ear torn, a button eye missing and some of the stitching on it's right paw loose. She brushed the dust of it and then like a tidal wave a memory hit her. She used to have a toy just like this. Called Mitch. But this was before she went to Africa. This was in the first three years of her life, which she spent with her now dead parents.
Kat was sitting on the lawn, her mother in a camp chair next to her, a summer dress and straw hat on. It was summer and luckliy a heat wave had arrived. She looked up as she heard a car pull up and recognised the blue Fiat 500. "daddy!" she shreiked as a man in a business suit stepped out. He looked tired but happy to see his child. Her mum stood and lifted her up taking her over to her husband. Soon Kat was being hugged and then placed on her dad's shoulders. "run! run! run!" she was saying delightedly and he was obeying running round the lawn neighing whilst his daughter shreiked with laughter and his wife smiled. Then he set her down and she went back to playing with her toys, her mother came back but soon they were joined by her daddy who was in more comfortable clothes. Kat was playing with six soft toys; a lion, a owl, a bear, a turtle and a rabbit. "Daddy, Mummy. Say hello to Leo, Hooty, Poohbear, Cracky and Mitch." she said pointing at each one in turn as her dad crouched behind her. "hello Leo. Hello Hooty. Hello Poohbeear. Hello Cracky. Hello Mitch." at each name he picked them up and kissed them to the three-year old's delight. But when he picked up Mitch instead of putting him back down he started to walk away with him. "Daddy!" she screamed knowing it was a joke. She pushed herself up, standing for a moment on wobbly legs, before running after him, arms out infront of her, eyes sparkling. "Come get him!" the man was running around in circles, holding the toy just out of his daughter's reach. "Paul! Stop teasing her." Kat's mum chuckled from her seat, as she watched them, pushing her sunglasses up onto her head. She would be joining in, except she was heavy with another child again. Then Kat had caught up and grabbed Mitch. Her daddy picked her around the waist, and swooped her round, whilst she called out gleefully, holding onto her toy with all her toddler might. She was set on her mother's lap and her dad sat on the floor his hand on his wide's bump. "Kat, put your hand on your mother's belly." he said softly. Kat swivelled and placed her hand gently on the bump next to her dad's. She giggled and clapped her hands when she felt something move beneath her hand. But then she put her hand back again and smiled up at her parent's who looked down upon her with adoring eyes.
The scene changed.
Kat was in the lap of a different, stranger lady. But she knew who she was. It was Izzy her baby-sitter. Kat had her thumb-contendly circled round Izzy's and was snuggled up comfily as she blocked out the noises of the TV which her baby-sitter had just flicked on. She was warm and happy in the lap of the lady, having known her since she was 1 and a half. Her parents still had a life. Soon she fell a sleep and woke some hours later in her cot, darkness around her. She was wailing and she pulled herself up, hanging onto the rails and stamping as she screamed. But no one was coming. Her screams turned to quiet tears and she sat down, sucking a thumb a thing she only did when she felt alone, scared and worried. She could hear a noise out side of her house, like her own voice except more of a screech and it had a rythm to it. Blue lights where flashing through the thin, blue curtains and making strage shapes on the wall of her room. She took up her screaming again, wondering what was going on. Then her door opened, a rectangle of light was shed onto the soft carpet and the baby stopped looking at the person who stood there. HIs hair was long, his face haggard, his eyes had bags under them, his clothes were smart but they looked old, creased and worn. But what made her cry again was the look in his eyes. She had never seen it before in her life, never encountered it in the years of which she had been cared for. The look was one of hate. He was advancing towards her and she nothing was coming out of her mouth anymore, only short breaths. The glint of something silver flashed as he raised something above his head. Kat cowered unaware of what pain would come next. But then there were stomps coming up the stairs, loud noises, male voices, rough and strong. The man was turning around and then the light was on, men had surrounded him and were taking him away. The baby cried and cried and one of the men turned walking over. She watched as he talked into something black and that was making a staticky sound. He never took his eyes of her and she the same. Then he was bending down and scooping her. Who was this strange man? What are you doing? Where's mummy? Wheres daddy? all those thoughts ran through her head and she mumbled incoherrently, thrashing in his firm grasp. They were following the first group and then they were outside, and Kat was silenced by the hugeness of it all. Women and men were standing around, a few in van backs, some talking into the same black thing, some wrestling the man into a car which had blue flashy lights on them. pretty. Kat thought all of a sudden, still her little mind was taking it all in. Ladies in hats with stripes on them talked, men in yellow reflecting coats moved around and then they all parted and Kat's cries were the only noise that broke the silence as two trolleys were pushed through the parting, lumps covered in white sheets. Kat didn't know what they were as she thrashed still, wanting her parents and wanting all this to stop. Next a lady came up and took her, she was given a bottle and Kat drank from it feverently. Soon her eyes drooped, but only after half-an-hour, after she had seen the trolleys been loaded, a smashed blue fiat 500 towed away and Izzy in tears being talked to by a man. Izzy had tried to come over, Kat saw that but had been held back. Kad hadn't liked that, but then she had been given the drink.
A different scene again.
Kat was in a bright white room, a monitor beeping red and blue next to her. Izzy was holding her rocking her gently from side to side, tears still pouring down her face. "Izzy." Kat squealed happily not remembering the now blurred events of earlier. But all Izzy could do was smile and squeeze her before she was put into a pram and wheeled away outside and to a van. She didn't like this either. Everything was coming back now, as she was placed into a children's seat at the driver started the car.
The scene was different for a third time, but Kat was older. eight or nine.
"Kat, what you have to understand is that they loved you and still do, except now they're not here to tell you that. If you pray they'll hear you and now you still love them too. That night when they crashed it was no accident, but your parents had done no wrong. Only the man had. He was a nutcase." kat was looking into Izzy's face, her own looking rapt with attention. but her eyes were wet too. This was the first time she had been told what had happened that fateful night, siz years ago. "but why did they go?" she asked tentatively. "They didn't want to love." Izzy took her hand smiling gently. "They were killed, murdered for doing nothing wrong. They were lovely people and the best parents I know. Now, get some sleep and remember to pray and don't forget, they haven't gone not really. they're still in here." and she placed her own and Kat's heart over Kat's. This promptly made Kat burst into tears and it was a while before Izzy's hugs and soothing noises calmed her. She climbed into the dormitory bed, looked down the row of other empty beds, which would soon be filled with the other orphans. Kat smiled as Izzy kissed her on the forehead and fell almost instantly asleep, when the lights turned off. Mitch cuddled up next to her.
Kat's eyes flashed open and she looked down at the small creature and hugged it tightly. It Mitch she was certain and she was now also certain that this place was magical. She wiped the tears that had streamed down her cheeks and started off again, holding Mitch's paw so he hung limply by her side but he seemed to her to be alive again. She kept her gaze on the floor, still thinking of what she had just seen, that was the first time she had ever remembered something from the first three years of her life and it was still hard to come to terms with. And so when she first stepped over the glinting metal she didn't see it. but then it registered and she turned, bent down and grasped it firmly. It was the shape of a key. Opening her fist she looke down at the palm of her hand in which a key lay. She grinned. It was dainty, and seemed to be made of glass it looked so delicate. It was as light as a feather but at the same time seemed to be heavy with something. It was almost impossible Kat realised but as she looked closer, it seemed somehow to be heavy with emotion. It was dark, just a bit lighter then an ebony colour, with light flecks dotted around. The handle was like a rose, and the stem was a vine, she could see the little thorns and leaves carefully carved into it. She couldn't tell what material it was but she knew it was most certainly rare to feel so delicate and then not have snapped in her strong grip when she first picked it up. She looked around and for the first time -again- noticed that the doors handles were all shaped differently and they seemed to gleam with life. Out of one key hole she could hear the faint sound of singing, but out of another bird song reach her ears and then the next one she passed trumpets were playing. She smiled. She chose a keyhole and pushed the key into the lock. She turned it gently and closed her eyes waiting for a sign. Nothing. Again she tried. Nothing. The next door. No. The next one. Again nothing. She kept on telling herself it would be the next one along. Then she came to a door which had a rose as it's handle. She tried the key and closed her eyes. click
