Lukas counted to fifty and went looking for his sisters and Ash. He found the young girls quickly, but pretended not to, calling, "Where could Gabrielle and Joanna be? They're very tricky!" into the air. It seemed that almost everyone was downstairs or on the roof, so he didn't see anyone else as he searched. Finally he "found" his sisters, laughing with them as they tumbled out of their hiding place.
"Again! Again!" they squealed, but Lukas just smiled tiredly.
"Why don't you guys go see what's for breakfast?" he asked them. "I still have to find Ash!" He chased them down the hall playfully, and they giggled all the way down the stairs. Lukas assumed that Ash hadn't really gone to hide, and was probably in her room or on the roof. A quick search of the the floor he was on revealed nothing, and she didn't respond when he called her name.
She must just be upstairs, he concluded, and went up to the roof. There were a few people hanging around, but none of them had seen her. When he went back downstairs, she wasn't in her room either. "Weird," he said aloud, "maybe she really did hide..."
He was climbing the stairs again when a boy of about ten came running up to him. "Lukas!" he yelled, and Lukas thought quickly, remembering his name in the nick of time.
"What is it Sam?" he asked, pausing with his feet on two different steps.
"Dave stole my truck! Tell him to give it back!" while the boy was complaining, Dave himself appeared, holding the truck and looking sneaky.
"Hey, there," Lukas said, "I know you guys can share. Why don't you go play together?" his voice was tired, and the boys seemed to realize that he didn't want to be bothered, though they still looked angry at each other. They ran off, fighting in whispers, and Lukas sighed to himself. Sometimes all the responsibility was too much for even him. He reached his floor and began searching for Ash again, envious that she didn't have to worry about nearly as much as he did. That's not fair,he reprimanded himself, Ash didn't sign up for this nearly as much as I did.
Eventually, Lukas found her hiding in a closet, asleep. There was a slight smile on her face as she dreamed, and her ferret had curled up in her lap. Despite Lukas' dislike of anything furry, he had to admit that he wasn't against sleeping in a closet, where no one would find him. Besides, it was a relatively large closet, and Ash probably wouldn't be disturbed by him a few feet away in the corner... he dismissed the idea as creepy, but figured he probably shouldn't leave her there. "Hey, Ash," he whispered, shaking her shoulder gently.
((That was a little long and terribly rambling. I apologize.))
