Dinosaurs and their Facts:
STEGOSAURUS:Everyone knows the Stegosaurus because of its unique features. There were 17 bony plates on its back and the two pair of spikes on its tail. The real word for those particular tail spikes is thagomizer. There has been a lot of debate regarding this thagomizer because some scientists are claiming that they were just "for looks" as others say it's an obvious weapon of defense. It just so happens that the tail of the dinosaur ossified tendons which made it more flexible. It was a very unique find because most dinosaur tails are known to be stiff as a board based on the fossils. The stegosaurus plates were in two rows and were alternated in alignment. This is how the stegosaurus got its name, which means "roofed lizard" or "covered lizard". These plates were covered in thorns and used in defense or they were covered with skin and used to control their body temperature. To keep warm it would direct the plates towards the sun or place them into the wind to cool off. Obviously, the stegosaurus is a cold blooded dinosaur because of this.It had a long, narrow, pointed skull and a toothless beak. The stegosaurus had a very small brain, about the size of a walnut. It seems kind of strange that such a big animal would have the brain the size of a squirrel, but it's true. Some people wonder if they had a second brain somewhere that was used just to control its legs and tail. Their rear legs had three short, wide toes with hooves and were longer and straighter than its front legs which had five short, wide toes with short hooves. They had very strong legs and it could stand up on its hind legs to reach for leaves on low branches.

TRICERATOPS:You see the Triceratops everywhere! In every dinosaur movie, toys, teddy bears, and pictures. Children are so interested by this Canadian found dinosaur. The Triceratops lived during the late Cretaceous Period. These somewhat resembled a rhinoceros. It has three horns and a solid shield like armor around the neck. They were the last dinosaurs dated before the extinction of dinosaurs making them the last species of these enormous lizards. Most of the fossils were found together in herds showing they stuck together. Also they had big cheek pouches to grab and eat mouthfuls of food.

BRONTOSAURUS:The Brontosaurus (now called Apatosaurus) was discovered in 1879 by Othniel Charles Marsh, a professor of paleontology at Yale University . This dinosaur was from the diplodocidae family and lived for millions of years during the late Jurassic period. Brontosaurus was at the time the largest dinosaur discovered at the time and still is the largest one (in mass) discovered to date. There has been some controversy over the name brontosaurus because when it was discovered, it was believed to be a different species than the Apatosaurus, discovered two years earlier. In 1903 scientists realized that both dinosaurs where the same so they reverted back to the less charismatic name Apatosaurus. However the name Brontosaurus which is now just considered a synonym was still widely used in popular literature until the mid 1970's. In fact, in 1989 the US postal service used a brontosaurus on one of their stamps with the name "brontosaurus" printed on it simply because it is more familiar to the general public then its scientific name(. If you actually translate the name Brontosaurus, it means Thundering Lizard and is a member of the Sauropoda dinosaurs. Because they were herbivores the needed really long necks like a modern day giraffe so they could eat the leaves off of really tall trees although as many professionals clearly state that this dinosaurs' could not be raised high enough to eat from trees.

TYRANNOSAURUS(T.REX):There is little point introducing this dinosaur as famous, for in even a person with the lithest knowledge in dinosaurs will have heard of T. Rex. For over a century, it was heralded around the world as the largest carnivore to walk the earth, its fame prolonged by recent discoveries including the Wankel specimen, an articulated skeleton of which half of one hip bone was only partially fossilized & retained a decayed form of blood called 'hemes'. The hemes contained most of the DNA code of the T. Rex, & their were hopes of cloning the dinosaur. However, the genome was too fragmented, drowning the cloning possibilities. Henry Fairfield Osborn named Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1905. The first fossils were teeth found in 1874 in Wyoming , but T. Rex had not been discovered, & it was not known what animal the teeth belonged to. Since then the Tyrannosaurus genus has suffered much controversy; many knowledgeable people believe close cousins of T. Rex such as Gorgosaurus & Tarbosaurus should be re-classified as other species of Tyrannosaurus, & some think that the genus Tyrannosaurus should be taken of the ever-growing list of dinosaurs, with T. Rex being put under the name Manospondylus Gigas, a dinosaur named earlier. Further fossils of T. Rex have been found in the area in which Manospondylus was found, giving credit to this argument. For most of the time we have been aware of T. Rex people have thought it an unstoppable predator, effectively ruler of the Cretaceous Earth. Now, however, it is unclear whether it was a predator, a scavenger or both. From the number of fossilized T. Rex remains found, it can be inferred that it was a common dinosaur, unusual for a predator of such size. Remains have also been found with destruction patterns that a T. Rex consumed some of the carcass much after it had been killed. Tyrannosaurs are thought to have the most powerful sense of smell out of all dinosaurs, with some having curled tubes of bone inside the nose. These coils most likely would've been covered in a mucus that trapped smells in the nostrils, giving a stronger sense of smell to the animal. T. Rex would have had the second best sense of smell of all the animals at the time, bested only by its earlier ancestor Daspletosaurus. These skills are an aid for both a scavenger & a predator.T. Rex varies only slightly from the classic large theropods shape; a larger head & jaws in proportion to its body, with smaller arms so the animal would not be unbalanced. Forward facing eyes helped T. Rex judge distances well, & its relation to birds suggest it had good vision, much like modern day humans. Many of the other members of Tyrannosauridae had feathers, only on hatchlings in the later, larger animals putting Tyrannosaurs firmly into the Coelurusaur family. No T. Rex fossils have been found with feather impressions, but its closest relative; Torosaurus, has been found with feather impressions as hatchlings. Like many dinosaurs closer to birds, T. Rex had a large brain, perhaps the largest of any dinosaur. Casts of the brain-case are as large as a human's, albeit quite a different shape.T. Rex teeth are like most theropods', serrated. The largest teeth in the mouth were a foot long in most specimens, & are all the same shape. T. Rex replaced its teeth on a regular basis, dropping old teeth with a smaller tooth underneath, much like sharks. The largest most complete fossil find, Sue, measured 12.8 meters (42 feet) long, & 4 meters (13 feet) tall at the hip.

VELOCIRAPTOR:A Velociraptor dinosaur fossil was first discovered by Henry. F. Osborn in Mongolia during 1924. Velociraptors were commonly found in dry desert regions such as China , Russia , and Mongolia . There were over 12 full fossil structures discovered as well as over 50 partial fossils found as well, so the Velociraptor dinosaur has been heavily researched by thousands of paleontologists and scientists for a long time.
