Mira Mira sits on the beach, lounging vacantly on a rock wearing her favorite bathing suit. Other Sirens surround her, tanning on mats in the warm sunshine. The teal water glistens, cool and inviting in the hot weather. She sighs, eyes on the water. What now? What could she do? Sighing, she lays down on her mat and stares into the sky. It's so boring. Why can't anything exciting happen to her?

I watched the water reverently. Water droplets soared out of the pool. I wasn't going in the water around other people. Sure I had to be a hybrid, sure I had to keep secrets. Not being able to swim was one of them. Staying under a dumb umbrella was another. No one understood why, despite the war and the conspiracy. They shrugged it off easily, because they were normal. "Come on, Echo! There's nothing to be afraid of!" Brittany said. She grinned and swept her hand out of the water, gesturing for me to come in. A stray drop of water flew off her fingertip and landed on my thigh.
It shone for a moment, then absorbed into my skin. A look of panic spread across my face, and my already numbing legs carried me to the closest cover: a patch of bushes on a hill not far from the pool. I passed through a lot of sunlight on the way there, but but all I could do was hope no one noticed my jet black ears and tail. My legs had nearly pulled themselves together by now, so it had been all I could manage to force away the cramps and dash for cover. I sat down, panting hard as a bead of sweat slipped down my forehead.
I could hardly make myself look away from my changing legs. They cramped terribly. From here, I just can't explain what happens. My legs just fade and are covered with scales, dark black and deep violet, forming a long graceful tail. All trace of sanity in me seemed to evaporate at the moment. The craziness, the war, the conspiracy. . . I totally agreed with the government. I'd never be used to the change. My jet black tail shimmered. After about ten straight minutes of being dry, my filmy gray flapping fins faded and the violet and black scales melted back into my skin. I felt utterly hollow.
I traveled briskly in the shadows back to my seat. "What was that?" Brittany asked. She looked pretty concerned. . . What. . . had she seen anything? I had been in the light long enough for anyone to see. . . She's my friend, she probably watched me run away. . . What if. . .? No. She couldn't have. Not possible. The cold numb feeling in my legs that I got when my tail was forming came back. I knew that feeling well. That feeling was terror. "I've. . . I've gotta go." I grabbed my pool bag and dashed out of sight.
"Cas. I know you're in there. I know you can hear me. Cas, it's me. We're family. We need you. I need you."
Adeline twisted through the seaweed. She wondered what new faces she would meet in this new place. Her turquoise tail shone under the rays of sun that poked through the ocean blue as she approached the new kingdom. Entering the village, she swam to the university, where she would be studying philosophy.
