Ever since Onyx was a child, his ambitions had been different to those of the rest of his tribe. His friends had wanted to be tunnel-carvers, furniture-makers, sculptors and, the most daring ones, benders. He, on the other hand, had wanted to be an explorer. He used to make detailed drawings in the sand of what the outside world might look like. He made warped drawings of trees from old carvings. He had roped his friends into detailed games about defeating the fire nation. The other children had been eager at first, but had soon lost interest as they became like their parents: Conservative and wary. While Onyx's friends were 'growing up', he was not. His interest had only grown. As soon as he was old enough, he'd begged to be allowed outside to farm and keep watch. He'd been denied. He'd gone anyway. It had been better than he ever could have expected.
So, now, he's made his dream a reality. He's off to have adventures.
It's not nearly as fun as he'd expected.
The last night had been a horrible one. It had poured down with rain, only letting up in the early hours of the morning. Onyx, who had trusted the heat of spring to keep him warm, is still damp and feeling a little bit sorry for himself. However, he knows what will cheer him up. The never-ending, sprawling, breath-taking, colourful view of the world. He is by the coast. He's not far now. He's never seen the sea. Today will be his first glimpse of it. Smiling inwardly, he picks up his pace, heading for a small hill. He can already smell the difference in the air. It smells tangy. It feels moist. He climbs, puffing a little as he gets to the top. He keeps his eyes closed, feeling his way. The earth leads him, telling him where it ends, cautioning him when there is a ditch or rise. He wants to see it all at once. The ground levels up. He's there. His heart beats with excitement. This is it. This is it, he thinks. He can't contain himself any longer. His eyes flash open.
His first view of the sea is obstructed by a girl. This is a little disappointing to him. However, he gets his look at the sea, and it does not disappoint. It goes on forever. He only gives it a short look before returning his attention to the more interesting part of the landscape: Another person. He steps up beside her. He's not too sure how to initiate a conversation, so he just stands in silence, hands behind his back. He's in no rush. If the girl speaks, she speaks. If she doesn't... There will be other people to talk to.
That is the magic of being in the world.
