"I-I Don't know.." Whyspr murmered. She closed her eyes. She didn't know what she felt. Hatred? Dissapointed? Love? She blinked a few times."Um.." She opened her eyes, but didn't look toward him."I'm going to get some rest....you should..Too." She said slowly, then she flew off toward her cave, flying slowler then usaully. She glanced back once, but didn't again.

And she could still /worry/ about him?

"Five, what am I /doing/?" he muttered aloud, long after she had left. Even as he said the words, he began walking, not caring that if he shifted form he could fly to where he wanted to go in a matter of moments, not caring that if he ran as fast as he could, it wouldn`t take much longer. He needed the time to think.

Hours passed in this fashion, with the endless serenade of birdsong and the rustling of the trees and the comings and goings of forest creatures, a sonata he was deaf to, lost as he was in his thoughts. He`d long decided that he would leave...leave in the morning. Just one more night...just another night. One more moonrise, one more moonset, just another sunrise, and he would be gone out of her life for good.

But now he climbed a tree near the edge of the forest, a tall oak with strong branches. Solan sat at the junction of a branch and the trunk when he had climbed as high as the strength of the branches would allow, then leaned against the trunk. From where he sat, he could just see the mouth of the she-dragon`s cave...

...Just one more night.

Whyspr settled in the cave, facing the back of the cave. She laid her head on the cold rocky ground, her long tail curling around her body. She was laying on her belly, her wings folded against her sides. Her eyes survayed the walls aroud her.She felt trapped, even thought she could get up, turn around, and leave. Her thoughts kept wandering back to Solan, but she knew it would just be trouble if she went back. For the first in her life, she didn't know what to do.

It would be a long night.

Solan didn`t intend to sleep--he knew that only nightmares waited for him on the days that Black Solan had been able to surface. He watched the moon instead as it rose, watched as the stars took their places on the dark stage of the night sky, watched them turn slowly in their endless, solemn dance. And he watched the mouth of Whyspr`s cave. Why? He didn`t really know. Perhaps he thought that the Red from earlier would return, perhaps he thought that she would emerge from the darkness, perhaps he was just trying to catch a last glimpse of her before he left her behind for good.

He should have known better. Getting attached to people, dragons, and places...did nothing but poison the soul and darken thoughts.

Whyspr's eyelids drooped, and her breathing shallowed as she started to fall asleep. It was now completely dark inside her cave, so she closed her eyes and was asleep quickly. No nightmares haunted her sleep, but she shifted everyonce in awhile, like she could not get comfortable. But she also didn't have any good dreams.

It seemed as if the night would never end. As if each black second of darkness clung to its position in the neverending flow of time, reluctant to yield to the past. Solan might as well have been a statue, high in the branches of the tree--he hardly moved all night, his gaze fixed on the stars and moon above, the cold, glittering sentinels that forever watched from the heavens.

But in the end, as it always did and always would, morning came.

The rosy streaks of dawn light painted by an invisible brush broke Solan`s vigil; the statue returned to life. The sun was barely up, and yet he knew that it was now time to leave. Time to uproot himself yet again, time to abandon any semblance of normality and move on to another territory. He`d done it before, many times...so why did it feel so difficult to cross /these/ boundary lines? He jumped down from the tree, landing in a smooth crouch with hardly a sound, and stretched his stiff muscles, eyes drawn inexorably back to the cave mouth. But then he shook his head, refocused his gaze on the earth. There was no room for remaining attachments here...

He began to run. Like a shadow remaining from the previous night, he slipped through the trees, his rhythmic footfalls carrying him further and further away from the cave; each step was all at once more liberating and yet more binding than the last.

Whyspr woke up, and yawned hugly. She was still tired, and ber body ached. But she jumped up, hitting her head on the rocky ceiling. She turned around and walked out onto the edge. She flew into the air and then landed a few moments later at were Solan had slept. She knew he had left. She sighed, and sat down, curling her tail around her paws. She perked her pointy ears, but couldn't hear any wingbeats of pawsteps/footsteps. The sun had just risen over the mountains, but it still seemed dark to Whyspr. She turned away and padded slowly into the thick, dense forest. Her head was low, to keep from hitting her head on branches, and because she felt she didn't have enough energy to lift it. She kept her eyes on the ground, but didn't know what she was looking for, or if she was looking for anything.

After a while his pace slowed; what was he running from? She was likely still asleep. No one would follow him...of that he was sure. And even if they were, they`d have to have the tracking ability of a wolf to catch the faint traces of his smoke-and-juniper scent. He wasn`t out of her territory yet--no, perhaps not for another half-hour--but he knew he was far enough away.

The sound of a small forest stream reached his ears, and he headed away from the noise; he instinctively disliked the clear, clean scent of water, as did all War-line demons. He already had the blood he needed to sate his thirst--Black Solan had seen to that yesterday, much as he hated the thought, and he wouldn`t have to hunt again for a few days--by then, he would be in another territory, one far from here.

But as hard as he tried, his thoughts strayed back...back to the small cave in the mountainside. Was she glad to see him gone? Or would she miss him?

Memories of the last two days flashed in Whyspr's mind. She sighed, and stoped when she heard the small sound of a stream. She then found she was actually very thirsty. She walked forward a little quicker, but then stopped in her tracks. A faint familier scent hit her nose just barely. She crept slowly more toward the scent and sound, until the stream was in veiw. She didn't know why, but she sped up, unti lshe was trotting. But then again stopped when her paws felt cold water. She looked around, but didn't see him. Her shoulders sagged, and she lowered her head to take a long drink. She wanted to know why she felt so.. depressed. Shouldn't she be happy he was gone? He was a threat to her...Or was he?

A faint sound reached him, so faint that he might have missed it were he not demonkin...it was the splashing of water. Something had disturbed the stream he had passed not long ago...a deer? Heck, a frog could have just jumped into the water for all he knew. /Stop being so paranoid/, he berated himself, and continued on his way. This was a forest. That was a stream. Animals use streams. But all the same, he could help but glance backwards swiftly for any sign of pursuers.

No...nothing. Nothing at all...

...Right?
