There was an underlying tone to that sigh, a little frustration, suppressed. Coby slowly breathed out. He could understand. He shouldn’t have brought Helmeppo up. He hadn’t expected the guy to abandon them, it wasn’t like him, but whatever had possessed him to run, it was too late now. No…he’s just protecting himself. Maybe in a weird and kind of backwards way, he was the smart one. He slung his scarf around his shoulders and neck.

"Yeah. Before us…he had two grandsons he tried to train to be Marines. They both ran off to become pirates instead in the end though. He failed them, but he wanted to be sure he didn’t fail us and chase us away. Helmeppo and I…we were his long-term protégés, the ones who he succeeded with. Was that true? On one hand, as someone who was striving to become an ADMIRAL one day, no. He wanted to surpass all. On the other hand, it was the goal of EVERY mentor to have their protégé become better than them. Then that was when they knew they had succeeded, and given them all they could. That their protégé was going to be successful.

Coby smirked as he watched the giggling nurse wander off to tend to other patients. "Well well well. We're popular with the ladies, aren’t we?" He joked. He rolled his shoulders back. Only some lingering tenderness. "Actually yeah. Some water would be great." Especially for a speedy recovery. Coby usually made sure to stay well hydrated with how much he trained and worked, and how little he slept, but it wasn’t always easy, and in the past week or so, he had slipped. "I’m an on-the-field Marine with Haki tuned to emotions. It became pretty easy to determine shifts. Also a pretty vital skill for someone who fights with nothing but his bare hands," Coby pointed out, setting his cup aside. "Have to be able to predict an opponent. Eventually it just became natural to notice little shifts, like a raise of an eyebrow, or even just the way someone's eyes cloud over or shift elsewhere, or the tension of head and shoulders," he admitted.

He wasn’t TRYING to read people, it had just become a second nature of sorts. When Lucian started coughing, Coby squeezed his hand and reached forward to put a hand on his chest, gently pushing, trying to ease tense muscles to ease any after-coughing fit tension there was. He knew sometimes he found it hard to breathe after, personally, which always made him panic. He didn’t want that for Lucian too.
