"Awww," Eden brought a hand to his heart at the mention of hugging trees. A brief thought crossed his mind, he was tall and his favorite color was green. Does that make me 'tree' enough for a hug? I'm tempted to ask!
Before he could make up his mind, the subject shifted back to the Gauntlets. "Oh, yes. That trainer was out for our blood," He said, eyes wide in mock horror. "Best of luck tomorrow! Avenge us poor, unfortunate Careers who were so brutally struck down."
Eden smiled as Sienna accepted his offer. He had the impulse to offer his arm as a gentleman would, but decided against it. Other districts' customs were bound to be different, possibly making for an awkward situation. He was already awkward enough!

Reyna suppressed a snicker, excited to witness what her new best friend had in mind. It wasn't long until the wimpy little kid from District Ten came along. A host of potential insults and slurs swirled in Reyna's head, just waiting to be unleashed. But Sharnaz's idea was even better - she sent that runt flying. And better yet, it looked like an accident. You're a freaking genius! Reyna wanted to say, but remained silent, just staring with a fake shocked expression. God, it was hard to hold back laughter with the look on that loser's face.
As Sharnaz leaned over the kid with false concern, Reyna spotted a couple other tributes coming their way. Of course, that bleeding-heart Career knelt beside Rieka. What a pathetic murderer, trying to ease his conscience with superficial acts of kindness. He could at least be honest about how terrible of a person he was. But no, he had to pretend some morals existed inside that twisted heart.
The moment Eden opened his lying mouth, Reyna slapped him. She didn't need to fake her anger and hatred. It was already there. Before the murderer could react, she threw him with all her might. He landed shoulder-first but didn't cry out in pain - disappointing.
"Get away from her." She stood in front of Rieka, making direct eye contact with the cowardly Career. The faintest hint of tears shone in his eyes. Pathetic. Holding back a laugh, Reyna turned to 'reassure' the kid. "Don't worry. I won't let the Career hurt you."

All thoughts of manners went out the window when Rieka tripped over an outstretched foot. Judging by the other tribute's shock and concern, it was an accident, but Eden's heart still ached for the tiny tribute. He knelt beside her as a concerned parent would.
"Are you hurt-" The words barely left Eden's mouth before the slap hit him. Eyes wide, he turned to see the District Twelve girl, her face contorted in rage. Rough hands grabbed him by the collar and threw him aside. His shoulder struck the floor hard - he hadn't expected to be attacked before the Games begun. All he could do was grit his teeth and remain silent, preserving some shred of dignity.
"Get away from her," Reyna growled, standing protectively in front of the child. She stared him down for a moment, blazing hazel eyes meeting misty green. Then she turned her back on him and murmured, "Don't worry. I won't let the Career hurt you."
The words struck like a dagger in his heart - but they echoed with truth. Although his intentions were good, Eden's conscience was no clean slate. He rose to his feet, head bowed in shame. She has every right to feel this way. I should go.
