Uh oh... Eden smiled nervously when he saw Madeline shaking her fist at the sky. The sight was too familiar, he'd seen it a million times back at the Career Academy. She would sit at the back of the classroom, ignoring the teacher as the lecture dragged on. Then, the moment the teacher called on her... the explosions would start. The worst insults would shoot out of her mouth in a torrential wave. Now, seeing Madeline like this, Eden realized he was approaching an alarm clock winding up. Except there was no snooze button!!
The journey back to camp didn't take long. Despite not paying attention in her classes, Madeline's lessons were surprisingly well-structured and interesting. Eden was certain Licaria was taking notes back in the Capitol.
He returned to camp with a smile. Judging by the wisps of steam coming from the water, Caspia was pretty much done boiling it. Now all he had to do was add the chamomile and they'd have themselves a lovely cup of tea.
A horrible scream snapped him out of his thoughts. Eden whirled around, only to see Chaska trying to comfort his distraught-looking district partner. His hand flew to his mouth as if silencing a cry of horror. Gloria... Gloria looked almost unrecognizable, hysterical and covered in sweat, once-proud blue eyes now bloodshot and wild. Thank heavens Chaska was holding onto her and Caspia stood calmly nearby. That look in Gloria's eyes... she didn't recognize him or Madeline at all. Eden didn't like where this was going.
Caspia's weapon lay at her feet, so Eden took the hint and slowly placed his swords down as well. He locked eyes with Madeline, silently pleading for her to do the same. Please don't do anything rash...
"It's just us, Madeline and Eden. I'm sorry I scared you." Eden spoke gently, keeping his gaze downcast in an attempt to show he wasn't a threat. Right now, in this tortured state, poor Gloria might only understand body language and simple words. It took all the willpower in him to restrain his tears. Although it hurt to see her suffer like this, becoming emotional would make the situation worse.
