➵ Eden Beauregard of District One
➵ Location: North

(I apologize in advance for the long post! I normally cut for length, but not today - I wanted Eden to say everything from his heart without me silencing him.)
A smile spread across the youngest Career's face as his allies approved of his plan. Caspia's words offered some reassurance to him, the anarchy-spreading villain hadn't quite escaped unscathed from the brief chase earlier. No doubt she would struggle to treat her injury in this frosty wood, on the run, no first-aid kit or unfrozen water within her grasp. Soon her time in this arena would draw to a close.
Inexplicably, Eden felt a brief pang of sympathy at the thought of Sharnaz helpless and struggling, but he pushed it down. She'd inflicted a much worse fate on sweet, innocent Rieka. A murderer like this would be fortunate the Careers took her out after a swift hunt, before tributes of other aggrieved districts found her and dealt even more painful versions of justice.
Chaska's insightful explanation of their battle plans lifted Eden's spirits again, this was the scythe-wielder's time to shine. His wisdom in the art of battle shone through in each word. Eden couldn't stop beaming at him, proud to fight beside his brother-in-arms.
Much to his relief, most of his allies agreed with his call for a snack break. Chaska passed the bread tin to Eden, which the boy gratefully took with both hands, the respectful way to accept something from an older family member. He took one of the rolls and bit into it, savoring the rich foresty flavor from the little specks of herbs peppered within, a lovely contrast from the airy and delicate breads of District One. Eden found himself wishing he'd done more for Sienna - she was so generous to give her token and all this.
Gloria was already complaining, but Eden didn't even notice. He was too busy enjoying his bread. But when his ally butchered the late child's name - heaven rest her soul - he pursed his lips and fixed her with a cold stare. Chaska and Caspia responded to the rudeness calmly and directly, causing the blonde to distance herself without so much as another word.
Eden didn't pay any further attention to her, she could go sit in time-out and think about her attitude. He was a little concerned it might affect his allies, though, especially Chaska who'd saved that child's life only to watch her die at the callous hands of a coward. With a sympathetic look in his eyes, he placed his hand on the District Two boy's arm to hopefully provide a little comfort.
"Here you go," He murmured, handing the two of the last bread rolls to Madeline and Killick. There was one more left, but instead of splitting it into ridiculously small portions, Eden put it back in the tin to save for Sienna. If they ever crossed paths again, he'd tell her of a successful hunt, how all six Careers united in perfect harmony to bring down the murderer.
"We ate your rolls before the chase," he would say, "and it gave us the edge we needed. All of us made it out alive."
Right now it was a fantasy, but they were about to make it a reality. Eden had utmost faith in his alliance. Yes, even the ones who could be belligerent and ridiculous at times... they were irritating but he loved them too. As he put the tin away in the backpack and zipped it up, he realized with an ache in his chest that it was time. Time to face whatever awaited them in the forest.
"Before we go in, I want to get something off my chest," Eden started.
"Madeline, with you here, I feel like a piece of home has come with me from District One." Whatever anger or resentment he'd felt for her earlier had faded. Eden was terrible at holding grudges, he just couldn't bring himself to stay mad.
"Killick, I heard once that actions speak louder than words. And your quiet support speaks volumes to me."
"Gloria, you're part of this team too. We might not be friends, as you said. But that won't stop me from fighting by your side."
"Caspia, you remind me of someone very close to me." He was referring to his mother - still too painful to mention directly. "You're both strong, honorable, and look like you give great hugs. And being around you makes me feel so much safer."
"And Chaska..." his eyes were a little misty as he turned to his final ally. "Where do I begin? You're like a brother to me. I would trust you with my life, and I feel privileged to fight beside you. It's hard to describe in words, so I hope you don't mind..."
Eden stepped forward and pulled Chaska into a bear hug, squeezing him tight. He never wanted to let go. Extending one arm, he gestured to Caspia, Killick, and even the others that they could join the hug if they wanted. A group hug! If you removed a few letters from 'Careers', it turned into 'Care', and Eden felt that was no simple accident or coincidence. It meant something to him.
"I'm so proud to have you as my allies."
