➵ Eden Beauregard of District One
➵ Location: Cornucopia
➵ Tagged: All Careers
Eden smiled at Caspia's chipper response followed by a compliment. After the chaos of the bloodbath, they all needed her big sister presence on the team. Of course, the other Careers had important roles to play too. Gloria and Madeline with their high standards, Killick with his quiet support, Chaska with his strength and protective instincts. Eden was so happy everyone made it through safe.
"Caspia's right. You all did amazing!" He added his own encouragement. His allies deserved to know how great they were.
The others seemed to agree with his suggestion to head east. Eden nodded in assent at Caspia's input - he wasn't too keen on navigating murky swampland or dense forests. Too many hiding places for ambushing enemies and hunting mutts.
As he started towards the water, he noticed Gloria seemed reluctant to continue. Eden frowned in sympathy before an idea hit him. They'd been graciously gifted with waterproof boots by the Gamemakers, but each pair was proportionate to the wearer's height. At six feet tall, Eden had some of the tallest boots to match. That meant less water would slosh over the top edge and into the boots' interior. He took them off and offered them to Gloria, hoping she wouldn't be too offended by the idea.
"You can wear my boots if you'd like," Eden smiled at her. "They're taller, so they might keep more water out."
➵ Mentor Commentary
Madeline's behavior continued to prove interesting. Licaria's notebook, now covered in chicken scratch, had clearly taken the brunt of the mentor's excitement. The pair from District One were such a contrasting duo. Watching them interact, whether with each other or with the other Careers, brought an excited smile to Licaria's face.
Icarus remained silent, but a proud smile warmed the mentor's expression. He'd watched Chaska save the lives of two children, decapitating their would-be murderer in a single strike. The young man's honor and discipline were impeccable.
As for Gloria, Icarus' eyes held nothing but approval as she knifed another tribute from a distance. But then she complained about getting her feet wet. A brief frown crossed Icarus' face, but he chose to ignore the finicky comment. It was of no consequence.
Quillon shook his head as his male tribute's head rolled. What was that kid's name again? Alek or something? As for the female tribute, she'd run off into the marshland but was avoiding contact with other tributes. Coward.
Edmund leaned forward, eyes glued to the screen during the whole fight. He couldn't help but applaud as his tributes struck down their enemies. A huge smile spread across his face - Killick and Caspia were amazing!
Quillon yelled at him to shut up, but Edmund ignored the rude mentor. He was too busy being proud of his little Career babies. Payne was wrong to underestimate Killick, as the size difference between them hadn't mattered at all. And Cooper didn't stand a chance against the true wielder of that trident. Oh, if Caspia or Killick made it out alive, Edmund was adopting them at once.
When Greg went down with a knife in his back, Khali didn't even notice. She was completely focused on Sharnaz. As the tribute cut out impromptu dagger holsters for herself, Khali smiled a wicked smile at the mental image of the near future. Sharnaz would be able to use those blades soon. She was heading north now, no doubt already forming a plan in that brilliant little head of hers.
Gleam rolled her eyes. Not only had Colby stuck with his alliance, he'd fussed over that tribute from District Eleven. Why did he care about that girl? Only one of them could escape the arena alive, he shouldn't get attached.
As for her other tribute, Winona had died too quickly for Gleam's liking. That worthless idiot deserved to be mauled by mutts.
Garry didn't flinch as Moses killed another tribute. He'd witnessed bloodier deaths than that, and was admittedly a little desensitized to his tributes taking lives in the arena. Whatever it took to keep them safe.
His heart pounded with worry as the District One boy charged towards Sienna. Eden lashed out with his swords - but missed every time. Odd for a Career who'd scored 10 in training. Then it hit Garry - this was the boy she mentioned. He'd spared her on purpose.
Both District Seven tributes escaped to the south, where they reunited with their alliance and started a long trek away from the arena centrepoint. Now Moses was having trouble with a small bird. Garry felt bad, but he couldn't help but chuckle.
Jasper paced back and forth around the room. He'd chewed his nails to stubs in his rampant worry, seeing poor Penny so terrified and disheveled. Worst of all, the sponsor gift he'd sent to comfort her hadn't even arrived yet. What was taking so long?
He calmed down just a little when Felix comforted Penny. You're a good man, Felix. Please keep her safe, Jasper pleaded in his mind. All he wanted to do was hug his poor tribute and tell her it'd be okay. But he couldn't.
As for Darius? Jasper was growing to hate that young man. He'd tried to kill the smallest tribute for heaven's sake!
After watching both his tributes die in the bloodbath, Ronny just shrugged and went back to texting on his phone. When a message popped up, asking how he felt about Payne and Bridgette's deaths, Ronny provided a telling reply... "idc."
As an older tribute snuck up behind Rieka, Jill had to clap a hand over her own mouth to silence the scream. Inexplicably, the Career from District One came to her aid just in time. Once Rieka recovered from the shock, she had nothing but kind words for the Career and it melted Jill's heart. That little angel could bring out a hint of goodness in anyone's soul.
Her eyes widened as Rieka broke into a run, then lunged at an older tribute twice her size. All to save her friend Jay. She was successful too, buying just enough time for the District Two boy to decapitate the attacking tribute. Oh my god... she's the bravest little pup I've ever seen. I better not start crying in front of the other mentors.
Oh, and Cooper was dead too. A shame. Jill didn't dwell on it though, all her attention was on Rieka.
Himaya watched Zoe run off from the Cornucopia. A wise choice for self-preservation, and she and her alliance were reunited in short order. Zoe didn't seem to react well when her ally killed another tribute, but she seemed to reconcile with the older teammate before long. It seemed the entire team got along pretty well.
As for Jay, he'd almost been murdered by a cowardly idiot. Himaya clenched her jaw in rage at the very thought. Thankfully, his ally came to his rescue, delaying Aleksander just long enough for a Career to take him out. If Rieka and Chaska hadn't been there... things would've turned ugly. Aleksander is lucky to be dead. If he made it out, I would kill him for attacking my child.
Maverick was shaking with anticipation as he watched Felix and Penny navigate the bloodbath. Even though the District Eight girl wasn't his tribute, Maverick was concerned for her well-being too. Thankfully both of them made it out alive.
When Penny wrapped her arms around Felix, seeking comfort, it warmed Maverick's heart to watch his tribute hug her back. He calmed her down by repeating Maverick's exact advice. Stay hopeful.
Maverick couldn't help but smile in pride. As for Reyna... Mav wasn't worried about her. He was more concerned about her potential targets, including poor Felix or Penny. She seemed like the type who'd ruthlessly kill her own district partner.
