I didn’t leave because I didn’t want to. The words echoed again and again in his mind. He’d been HORRIBLE. Anyone else would’ve turned away and never looked back. Karter kissed her forehead. "I’m the luckiest guy in the world."

Bailey smiled faintly, and her eyes flickered around the room. “So what’s going on between you and WICKED?" she asked.

Karter leaned forward. "Okay, it’s like this, and this's gonna sound weird, but bear with me. I worked with them initially, mainly ‘cause they offered my last survivin' sister aside from Nova safety before she could get sick, so of course, I took it. My task was to get'cha all outta the Maze, obviously, hence why I knew the code," he pointed out. "Next, they tasked me at gettin' you guys through the Scorch to a set location and mappin' brain activity." Here, he grinned, and a glint came to his eye. "I’m gonna defy them. They’ll try to give you your memories back. That part's up to you, but when they do, they’re also gonna plant a chip in you that’ll be able to track brain activity out in the Scorch and report it back here. The night we leave, I’m gonna sneak into the control room and set the chips to disable after one day. They won’t be able to track us after it’s been disabled. We can leave ‘em COMPLETELY behind."

He was worried for what might happen to his sister if he betrayed them, but...his twin was here. So were the few people he called friends, and BAILEY. Goodness...if he let WICKED have her, he would never forgive himself, even if it got him to eventual safety.

"I’m gonna at that point change course and take ya towards the loadin' docks, where a flyin' vehicle called a Berg will pick ya up and fly straight for the Safe Haven. These people're called the Right Arm, they may look scary at first, but they’re the good guys, if we're seein' WICKED as bad," he explained. "I just need you guys to trust me. Just one last time, 'cause once we’ve reached that dock, we are FREE."

Bailey turned her whole body so that she was facing Karter head on to pay all of her attention to him. "Don't worry about telling me about everything, I've been through all of the baby and good" she pointed out, her voice low. Her eyes widened slightly when she heard Karter's plan, her hands clasped tightly together in her back.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked quietly.

"I did. I told you, Newt, and Jaiden, remember?" He asked. "When I came back from talkin' to Janson? I’ve gotta keep foolin' WICKED, just until we can make our escape. Once those chips're disabled though, that’s that. We're free, they won’t be able to track us, anythin'." Triumph gleamed in his eyes. Freedom. He’d worked with WICKED for Addilyn's sake, but he wanted his freedom as much as anyone else there. "We’ve just gotta focus on gettin' outta here first."

The young woman rapidly shook her head, a frown creasing her features. "No, that's not what I meant. Back before then. You say it has been a year, but I'd like to think that you trust me, don't you?" she asked him, her tone heavy.

"I do," Karter promised. It was hard to explain. With all the chaos, the truth wouldn’t exactly reinforce his theory on him knowing what he was doing. "This hasn’t been the plan all along. They ask me to do various things, and I either do 'em, or have to improvise a plan on them as we go. This bit's an improv plan. I know what I’m doin', but I’ll be doin' it on the spot," he explained.

Jaiden was looking around. She had finished her food quickly and now she wasn't sure what to do. She watched Newt for awhile and wondered if she should go sit by him. He looked someone confused and disturbed. She decided to go for it. She got up and sat down next to him on the same bench a foot or two down. "Hey" She started "What's up? You look terrible."

Newt jumped at the sudden sound of a voice, but quickly calmed down. The Lewder offered the girl a tense smile, but it was very clearly forced. "Just...thinkin' back to yesterday. Jenny and I were in the library and I found this book with a picture of some... zombie thing innit, almost human, but the look in its eyes was like a corner, starvin' animal. I wanna ask one of the staff or somethin', but I’m wonderin' if that’s what those Crank things are," he admitted.
