Kay had decided to turn in early; she had been tired out from a ball game last night.
It had been a hard day yesterday, the blackout, no PE, a boring family dinner, but finally, FINALLY her mother had allowed her to go outside to play some ball, just after the storm. Kay and dad faced up to Ty and Dave, scoring 5:6. And now, she hasn’t been able to sleep at all. Glaring at the half-done homework that she had ditched under the bed, she crawled up to a sitting position, and finally hopped out of bed and opened the window. She needed to cool off. The weak dawn light showed brightly against…smoke? Narrowing her eyes, she watched the smoke curiously, watching it waft up into the sky. Just yesterday, one of her best friends called her to tell about a barbeque, to celebrate the winning of their volleyball game. But this early? That’s strange. Very strange.
Finally, her curiosity can’t be contained. After all, she is curious Kat, right? Quickly changing into some long pants and a hoodie, she snuck out of her room, down the stairs. Her heart pounded inside her chest. If she is caught by her parents she would be dead meat. But still, her mother encouraged early morning walks. Leaving a note on the counter saying that she would be ready for school and is just around the neighborhood, she ran out of the house and started her car. With that, she pulled out of the driveway, following the trail that lead up to the smoke.
