Kay slumped in her chair, squishing down bits of chocolate cake with her fork, and then moving it around her plate in a glum, bored manner. The fork squealed upon the plate in protest. It was just a normal family dinner, and yet she felt that her mother wanted the whole family to get more and more formal. Just like that…her mother won’t even start until Dave gets home from his classes. And their family was just sitting and chatting. Kay didn’t like it, not one bit. She wanted to go down to the gym and play badminton, or soccer, or volleyball…anything other than sitting here. It was so unfair…they didn’t even get PE, just because of the stupid blackout! Casting a glance around at her family, her mother talking to Ty about grades, her father telling Dave about something he saw from work. Sighing, Kay continued to flatten the cake under her fork.
“Katherine, do I see you playing with your food?” Her mother’s voice rang out, putting all attention on her. Frozen in midsqueeze, Kay’s head snapped up. “No, ma’am.” Kay replied weakly, brushing hair out of her eyes and attempting to sit straight. Ignoring her brother’s chuckles, Kay sat more straight, choking her way through two chunks of cake, before sitting up. “Can I be excused, now?”
“Katherine, you will eat with the family until dinner is over. Your father is going on a business trip to Tokyo next week; you won’t get to see him for another two months. Sit down.” Her mother gave that strict mother look over her glasses, glowering at Kay. “Fine.” Kay nearly spat out the word, stuffing another forkful into her mouth. She was sure she heard her mother muttering about teenagers under her breath, and saying something that sounded vaguely like, “And to think I thought little girls would be sweeter than little boys…”
((Kay is a spoiled brat ^^;; ))
