Evangeline listened carefully to Hyland and sighed, pushing her pigtails back from her face. She glanced to the boy, hoping to hide the evident fear in her eyes, when she saw something odd. His eyes weren't hidden by his hair. Blinking a moment, she felt something, looking into his eyes; a heat, the same heat she felt when she was going to tell Shawn her story. Digging up memories, Eve looked to Hyland. "You're right...it's not a pretty story."
"Well, I guess I should start at the orphanage. My biological parents - God knows where they are - left me on the stoop. Apparently, a card was tucked in the blanket, and it simply said 'Evangeline'." Eve bit her lip; it was all flooding back. She didn't even care that Hyland knew her true, full name. "So, I was raised there. The headmistress made me 'into a lady'; basically, reading and writing and playing piano until I was sore all over. She wouldn't allow me to sing, and I was more a doll than human."
"Then, 'Dad' came along. Made up some bullsh*t story about his 'wife' dying, just so the headmistress felt bad enough to let him adopt me. But, as soon as he took me from the orphanage, he r-...he...h-he..." Evangeline bit her lip, and now the tears came, running down her cheeks. "He raped me. Abused me. Starved me. I didn't know what to do, so I tried to find a hobby to avoid it. I devoted myself to schoolwork, and I was labled a nerd. So I starved myself...tried to dye my hair..." She held a lock of orange-pink hair and cried out, tears flooding her pale face. As if defeated, she buried her head in her knees, sobbing terribly.
