Malour watched as Ryuji seemed to be losing hope, and when he asked about an antidote, she cringed internally. “What do I do? There’s probably no antidote. I don’t think anyone even lives here, besides us who got drawn into this.” However, she didn’t voice this, not wanting Ryuji to be drawn into even bleaker of a state than before. Her own mind was racing, desperately trying to think of a solution. There were very little options, and very little hope. No matter what she thought of, the only thing that everything came back to was the need for an antidote. She could try to slow the spreading of the poison, but that would only go so far.
As Ryuji lashed out at her, Malour felt herself go into a defensive mode. “Where did that come from?” She thought, trying to keep from yelling back. Then, he was suddenly apologizing, and he seemed to be genuinely sorry. “No different than me. I guess I can’t be mad at him.” She sighed softly, and responded, “It’s alright, you’re probably pretty stressed by all this.”
She glanced down at his arm, which seemed to be in pretty bad shape. She listened to what he had to say about leaving him there, and this caused her to re-think what she had planned. Maybe it was a bad idea to leave him behind. “I wouldn’t want to die alone, and if I leave and he dies, he’ll be alone.” Malour was torn between what to do. Either way his chance of survival was low. It would just come down to whether or not he wanted to be alone.
As Ryuji laid down on a nearby rock, Malour tried to remember everything she could have possibly been taught about what to do in these situations. She sat down next to the rock, and said in the calmest voice she could muster, “Alright, try to stay calm and don’t move. I don’t want you to even think about dying, got it? I’m sorry I had to bring it up earlier. But I’m not going to let that happen, alright?”
With that out of the way, she stood and looked around. There were several buildings that looked like there would be no-one inside, because they were dilapidated, or some even caved-in. Those she ignored, and her eyes travel to others that were still run-down, but in slightly better shape. “I wonder if there is anyone in those buildings. It’s worth checking out, anyways. But I have to make sure he won’t move…..” She glanced down at Ryuji, who was asking if he would really die.
“Alright, I’m going to check some of these buildings and see if there is anyone that might be able to help. But before I do that, I need to make sure that you won’t move.” Malour pointed towards his arm, and said, “I want you to keep that as still as possible. And don’t panic. Think of whatever you have to think of that will keep you calm.”
