A king? He didn't look old enough to be a king. All the kings she'd ever read about were fat and old. Twenty shrugged at his comment about convenience. "I guess," She said, "Only if it works."
As they spoke, Archi's attention waned. His head turned towards the approaching doctor. He could smell human suddenly drifting in from that direction. The beast let out a soft rumble, the flaps of his head quivering. Mere seconds later, the doctor revealed himself. Twenty turned towards him. Almost immediately, her eyes narrowed in distrust.
A doctor? Like the many that had caused her and Archi pain? Her uneasiness transferred to the monster, who responded with protective aggression. Archi took a step towards the man, letting out a shrill growl. Twenty stopped him.
No. He's not one of them. After all, if this boy king was from a different reality, then the doctor likely was as well. He most likely had absolutely nothing to do with the experiments performed on her and her companion. Archi begrudgingly stepped back behind Twenty, impatiently wondering if he'd get to rip anything apart any time soon.
"Archi
might be able to get us out of here. I'm not sure. We've never tried anything like this." She looked back at the beast. "Do you want to give it a try?"
Archi rumbled in response and turned his head to a nearby wall. He approached it, and placed a long, bony hand onto its surface. His sharp claws sunk into it, as if it were made of soft fabric rather than stone. The wall began to waver like a sheet blowing in a gentle breeze. The beast sunk into it further, the stone wrapping around his form like wet tissue. He tore through the other side, pulling free of the stone fabric, leaving an oozing wound behind him. He dropped to all fours and sniffed the familiar ground.
On the other side was the same building they were once in, but even more broken and decayed than before. It was dark, cold, and black, slimy vines covered every surface. The sky let off a faint, blue glow, illuminating the hellscape that the beast called home. This was the Upside Down: the parallel dimension.
Twenty followed the monster into the gaping hole. Her breath came out in small puffs, and she wrapped her arms around herself to fight off the bone chilling cold. It wasn't just cold; it was
maliciously cold. This place had an evil feel to it.
I don't want to spend long here, She warned. Archi turned his head back to her and huffed. The building was the same; they were in the Upside Down, but not
their Upside Down. It was very likely that they were going to end up back where they started when he went back through. Archi pointed this out to her, but Twenty shook her head.
"Just get us out of here."
Archibald led them to another wall, the vines that covered it pulsing. He went to place his hand on it, and they moved away from it to let him through. This whole dimension was a hivemind, everything connected and communicating. Luckily, everything but Archi. He was no longer linked to the Upside Down, Twenty having filled that role instead. As like before, the wall began to melt at his touch. Archi broke through to the other side, leading them unceremoniously back to the atrium they had started in. He grunted and lumbered out into the now much more inviting world.
