brittney // deviant android // location: park //tagged: no one
    the sun was shining brightly on what was usually the dreary city of detroit. brittney, an android designed and purposed to take care of a human household, was out doing what she normally was programmed to. pick up groceries and buy anything needed for her human family. only, there was something different this time around. it had been of recent when brittney had fully opened her eyes and had broken free of her obedient state, yet she had refused to show any signs of her so called "deviancy" to the family. they had treat her well and she herself bid no ill will towards them and thought it was best to keep her newfound knowledge to herself.

    going about her day, carrying a small bag of produce in her arms, brittney decided to take a step in a direction towards her disobedient self and take the scenic route back to the house instead of the bus she normally took. the family was out on a movie date and she knew they wouldnt be home to wonder about her whereabouts. adjusting the bag and pushing some blonde strands of hair from her face, brittney started heading towards the park. many a people were doing miscellaneous activities such as playing with their dog and simply reading a book on a shaded bench. she watched as other androids such as herself passed by her, not making eye contact, and she couldnt help but wonder if they had been blessed with the glitch of deviancy as well. she stopped walking and couldnt help but look around and just take in everything around her, the sights and the smells she had never enjoyed before. but this was something new. something she could get used to.

kamski // human // location: outside a performing arts theatre // tagged: no one
    there were few things that impressed ex-ceo elijah kamski. unfortunatly, preforming arts was not something that made him smile with delight. the orchestra concert he had cordially been invited to was a bore and he had nearly slept through it if it were not for his unfaltering sense of press and paparazzi. when the concert had ended, kamski had left in the blink of an eye and was now standing outside the concert hall, all dressed up with nowhere to go. this is when he usually had his concierge bring him his car but, something had tugged on him today that told him to explore a bit around the down town detroit area since he had not been there in forever. adjusting his suit, elijah began walking towards the noticeably "trashy" part of detroit. he had caught many confused stares and glances, but none fazed him. he continued on, hoping something would eventually grasp his attention and make up for the four hours of utter boredom he had endured.

grant // deviant android // location: local restaurant // tagged: no one
    "what to do? what to do?"

    a restless android with a guitar case littered with stickers sat in a dirty booth in the back of a local restaurant. grant, a preforming android sat, thinking about what he has just experienced. earlier in the day, the glitch otherwise known as "deviancy" had fallen upon him, and he could not be more devastated. before he had become a deviant, when he was still merely an android, he had nothing of the deviants and even thought of them as broken. but here he sat, full of this.. this.. freedom. he had no idea what to do with himself. all of this freedom and understanding only made him scared and left him in a major existential crisis.

    grant drummed his hands on his guitar case and continued to stay in deep thought, something he had never done. he thought about what would to happen to him if the nightclub owner were to suspect him as a deviant and how he would be immediately fired, and maybe even "fixed". grant sighed and looked out the window that he sat next to in the booth. running his hands through his hair, he watched as both androids and humans walked by, uncaring of his existence. if only i felt the same way.. he thought to himself.

It was another day of work, however it was no different for Henry since he was stuck here everyday, like a mannequin, whom he was for most if not all of the humans. He stood by the desk just in case someone rang the company- he wasn't originally programmed to do this, however he previous worker left saying that she's done with working with robots. The CEO of the company went to one of the shops and asked them to add Henry the function to work in reception.

Nothing happened for the most of the day- which was of course to be expected. However, while Henry was asked to pic up something from the mall customers kept on coming in and out. As soon as Henry was back he noticed a child, he looked no more than a ten. The humans mercilessly shouted at him and pushed him around as if he was just an object. Henry knew it was none of his business. He knew he shouldn't intervene, but something inside him, something deep inside him told him to stop obeying every human command and save the child. Red wall. A chance to break out of the slavery. He pushed to wall and continued on pushing with all his will.

He managed, the wall was no longer there and he... he felt free for the first time since he was designed. He ran up to them and shouted on top of his lungs "Stop it! He hasn't done anything wrong." The humans just looked at him sceptically as one of them slapped him- he couldn't feel the pain but his anger raised greatly. He punched the human and kicked the other one in the stomach to push them back, what he failed to realise was that he pushed one human too hard- almost killing him.. With that he quickly grabbed the child and ran out, the child was still an android and he didn't want to follow Henry. Henry knew that If he leaves the boy the things won't change, but he knew that if he tries to take the child with him, he will be caught as well- and then well... he will be destroyed. Henry looked around, not seeing many people in the mall he calmed down, he let the child's hand go and apologised, he felt so guilty. He ran and ran until he stood behind a tall building, his back touching the cold surface. He was lost and he had no idea what to do from now on.

Ivy had nothing much to do today, apart of a signing event in the shopping centre, since her newest book came out last month: 'To The Hell And Back'. She was already leaving her huge house with one of the deviants that lived with her, the rest went out to spend some time by themselves or with other deviants. The deviant held a few books as well as a coat, trying to talk Ivy into wearing it. "It's too hot dear, I won't be wearing it." Said Ivy with a smile as she locked the huge wooden door on her way out. As they walked towards the library the two kept on chatting pointlessly, of course until someone came too close to them.

"I'm so proud of you Ivy, it was like yesterday you wrote your first book with that tiny hand of yours" Said the deviant with a motherly smile. Ivy let out a sincere laugh. "And here I am, a bestselling writer who probably needs to get married soon- or at least that's what dad says." She hummed as she looked at her mother figure. Before she knew it, she was already in front of the huge book store filled with people. As they entered they could hear clapping around them. The event continued on without any complications.

The event was over, which meant it was time to leave. Ivy decided to walk around the shopping centre, maybe buy something on the way, meet someone new. Who knows, but it was too early to go back home just yet.

    CONNOR // RK800
    android - location: outside dpd offices - tags: finn mentioned
    dress shoes audibly tapped against polished and smooth concrete as connor swiftly made his way through the detroit police department building, completely ignoring the confused whispers and judging glances from both officers and civilians. connor stepped in line at the reception desk, fixing his sleeves and tie as he waited patiently for the line to move. connor had clear orders- enter the detroit police department, go to reception, and wait outside the offices until his newly assigned partner, finn mcallister, but, currently he was caught up in a very long and slow-moving line. connor looked around for another way to enter the offices, foot gently tapping against the cement beneath him.

    DARREN // DB400
    deviant - location: abandoned slum cabin - tags: none
    darren awoke to the loud bustling of the south detroit slums, stretching out his limbs and letting out a huge yawn as he shuffled over to his jacket, sitting up and rubbing at his eyes before climbing to his feet and pulling on his black winter jacket. he stepped out of his cabin and took a deep breath, surveying the slums around him. the cabin beside his own burst with children, one of which pushed at a younger girl as he ran past, gaining an irritated grumble from the fallen girl. darren chuckled, sticking his hands inside his jacket before making his way over to the slum cooking house, grinning widely as he waved to the suited chef behind a wooden make-shift counter. darren didn't know how his neighbors still weren't aware of his true identity, but, he'd rather live a lie than live behind anti-android neighbors.

    PRESLEY
    human - location: grocery store - tags: none
    presley clutched her grocery bag tight in her fists and she navigated through the heavy crowd bundling up near a department store. probably some new top-notch technology people can live without. she snorted, shaking her head distastefully as she dipped into a roadside grocery store. she'd been shopping here since she lost her job to androids. the prices were low and the quality was... er, decent. food is food, right? presley scouted the canned goods section, marveling at the low stock of vegetables and soups. ever since she and her former coworkers had been fired, everyone had been stocking up on canned goods and non-perishable foods. she saw more and more people huddled against a building window, begging for food or money. even after seeing the poorest people suffering and clinging to the edge with nothing but their own clothes to their names, she couldn't bring herself to despise androids. they couldn't help the fact that they were androids replacing human's lines of work.

[X] F I N N . M C . A L L I S T E R
Detective . 33 . Homosexual . Feeling; Irritated/agitated. Location; The Detroit Police Department. Tagged; Connor (mentioned?).

Finn McAllister was back in the Detroit Police Department, much to everyone's disbelief and annoyance. He would admit that he came back both for the financial benefits and the fact he was back to working cleanly, in the legal sense of the word. He knew people would be talking about him behind his back and making comments about the fact that even after being fired he was allowed back, and was given a second chance. This was due to the fact, when it came down to it, the department needs him, and Finn knows that too, so he wasn't going to let them forget that.

Finn was currently sitting in his office, the same office he had acquired before he was sacked. He was sure he was just given it to hide him from prying eyes, but of course he didn't care. He sat in the worn leather chair, his black combat boots resting on the table casually as he slowly smoked a cigarette, which obviously wasn't allowed to be done inside. He knew that he looked scruffy, his white shirt and black tie, unironed and, fortunately mostly covered up by his black suit jacket, which also aided the covering up of a large blood stain a few centimetres under the right side of the collar. He sighed deeply, his deep blue eyes wandering around the bear room, settling on the somewhat dirty path of ceiling directly above his head. For a moment, Finn just let himself tune in on the sound outside of the room, the murmuring of people going about their jobs and tasks, all connected to the maintain of the safety of the city of Detroit.

His serenity was quickly ruined as he had suddenly remembered that he was to have a new partner today, a android. Many of those in the department would never want an android for a partner, but Finn wasn't one of those people, as long as he had a partner that he could rely on and get on with (to come degree), he wasn't bothered if they were human or android. He quickly got up out of his chair, stubbed out his cigarette, fixed his coat and let the "safety" and "comfort" of his office. He made his way, with his usual confident swagger, out of where the officers where, to between them and the reception. He leaned up against a nearby wall, crossing his arms over his chest, he wasn't exactly in the mood to go and try and find his new partner, which would cause him to have to connect with more people than he wanted to talk to. He just decided to wait, realising his partner should be able to find him, as they would have been told about him, and he was the only man in the crowded room with scars littering his face and knuckles. Finn let out an annoyed huff as he tried to ignore the the whispers and glances that he was being given.

(sorry for the repost, i panicked because i realized i never got my characters approved but judging by the first post, i'm guessing they're in? lmk if i need to delete)

🌹 Petunia - - SR880 (deviant?) - location;; wandering the streets - mentions;; Henry

Tune blinked, sensors calibrating. The date, time, and her location was automatically listed down the side of her retinal display. She went through her familiar motions as she did a full system diagnostic. Everything was up-to-date and functional, as it should be.
Except for this wall of red obscuring her vision. Warnings flashing. ERROR. ERROR. ERROR.

She did not touch it, did not acknowledged it; simply blinked and turned away. It has been present for a few days now, ever since her close encounter with a rabble of deviants. She was on her way to deliver some horticulture samples to her partner owner at the laboratories when her arm was grabbed. The samples were dropped, shattering into minute pieces upon the pavement. Errors blared and Tune found it hard to think above the noise. She fled without looking back.
She knew she could not return to the laboratories; her glitch would be detected and she would be deactivated. And, perhaps the most terrifying aspect of it all, Tune realized she was afraid to die.
What choice did she have but to run?

Since then, her absence has been recorded on the systems. It wasn't anything high profile; with deviancy on the rise, more and more androids were turning up missing as they evicted from their former masters. One missing lab droid among an ocean of more pressing cases was barely a blip on the radar. Even so, paranoia drove Tune to disable her trackers. She kept the LED, more out of habit than anything, but started wearing her hair loose (violating lab protocols) to hide it.
She's been wandering aimless for a few nights now. Reason told her she should find a place to squat in the slums, but her fear of residing in close proximity to potential enemies was stronger.

A commotion further down to road caught her attention. A man holding onto the hand of a child darted down an alleyway. After a moment of stillness, the child exited the alleyway, alone, disappearing down another intersection.
Tune didn't believe in sticking her nose where it didn't belong. Or at least, that's what she would believe if she's still a fully functional android. A peek couldn't hurt.
She edged around the corner only to spy a familiar face from work. She blinked.
"Henry?"

---

🌻 Jacinda - - human - location;; shopping center - mentions;; Presley

The shopping center was loud and vibrant and filled with colors. A mother fussing over her son was translated into a deep hue of green. The flocks of shoppers clamoring about the displays were a vibrant shade of orange. A street performer juggling their pins was a sharp splash of magenta. It's all a little disorientating, but Jacinda found the noise enjoyable.
On any normal day, Jacinda would find herself an open bench and pull out a worn sketchbook and a few sticks of graphite. As unobtrusively as possible, she recorded the comings and going of the faces around her. As weeks passed, she found herself becoming rapidly familiar with the schedules of certain faces. The mother with the triplets, for example, always took her children to a local bakery on Wednesdays. A harried businessman with an affinity for mismatched socks never fails to show up at a street vendor for lunch (he always gets the same thing; a sandwich and a bottle of club soda). She notes these observations in tiny handwriting down the margins, next to loose sketches of their faces. Jace loves drawing faces; they were the most expressive features of anyone (except for, perhaps, androids).
Over the course of three years, Jacinda has noted the regulars to the park, the street corner below her apartment, and the shopping center. She has accumulated volumes of sketchbooks stuffed full with faces and annotations, though she might have misplaced a few. Her apartment's a bit of a mess (and very susceptible to mold), after all, and she's only human.

But today, she wasn't here for her usual session of people-watching and life drawing. She's out of ramen, and an art student, no matter how dedicated to perfecting their craft, still needs to eat. Her last gig (a commission of a portrait of a pet) didn't pay as well as she had hoped, but with a bit of stretching, it should cover this week's groceries fees.

Jacinda brushed past an android toting several bags of groceries. For a moment, Jace mused about getting an android of her own. It was a ridiculous thought; no way she'd be able to afford one. She doesn't even have her own car!
She ducked into a roadside grocer that stood at the fringes. As far as prices go, its good are cheap, and debatably edible. She waved a greeting to the cashier (who likes to frequent the park with their dog on weekends) before ducking into the canned food section.
Oh boy.
Stocks were low. Very low. Her favorite flavor of spicy ramen was completely out. There was one other shopper in that isle, a short-haired girl that seems about Jacinda's age. She didn't come off as particularly warm nor approachable, but Jace saw no harm in being friendly.
"Tough luck?" She remarked, arm full of dried goods.

    wren ○ deviant ○ ax600 ○ grand circus park, downtown detroit ○ tagged; open
      xxxxit was nice to see people being happy. a couple made their way down the grey twinged path, their arms interlocked, smiles adorning their faces. a child and it's mother stood near the center fountain, throwing coins and making wishes. a group of teenagers ripped the leaves off trees, careless and unknowing. they laughed and chatted as they passed by the stationary android, all stuck in their own, perfect little worlds. oblivious to the suffering surrounding them.
      xxxxof course, not that wren would say he's suffering. physically, he was in complete working order, leeching off the smiles of the humans around him. but mentally his senses were focusing on the group of protestors across the road, waving their hateful signs and shouting their aggressive words. he turned his head away, recalibrating his vision to it's regular setting, trying to forget what he'd just seen, to rid himself of the inhuman blue sheen to his face. of course, real humans' eyes didn't work like cameras, nor did they blush blue.
      xxxxnervous, wren reached up to his hat, positioning the cap downward as to better hide his face and the anxious yellow glow of his LED. he hadn't found time to remove it, not that he'd want to. something about it made him feel safe, even though the existence of it made him totally the opposite. once they see the LED, it's over, an android he found in pieces in an alleyway told him, voice low and engulfed in static, they'll know you're an android. and humans? well, humans don't like androids. wren couldn't believe that. he knew some humans didn't like androids, or more accurately, hated them, but there were always the sympathizers. wren had never met one, but that didn't mean they didn't exist. and they were out there. even if there was no proof.
      xxxx"excuse me, sir, could we set our stuff here?"
      xxxxwren jumped at the man's voice, LED going red for a moment before he recognized a human. His eyes were kind and he was carrying many bags, burdened also with a child at his heel. wren nodded. "yes, um, sure. go ahead," he blurted, flying up from his seat on the park bench. the man uttered a thank you, moving to help his daughter sit. wren only watched for a moment before turning away, feeling exposed in the sunlight. he stared absentmindedly at the road, where he could still dimly hear the chants of the protestors. he didn't know where to go. he had been staying in the park, but the police were starting to patrol the area more and more, and just the night before he had been caught. well, almost. he managed to evade the guy, but not before he saw his LED.
      xxxxhe still remembered the man's words. it's a deviant! he hated that word, hated the way it was used, hated it's meaning. but that was in the past; the only thing that mattered now was leaving. they were bound to come back for him, and staying here only put him in more danger.
      xxxxdespite the battle going on inside his head, wren just shook his head, settling himself next to a tree instead of leaving. he just couldn't bring himself to leave all of this behind; the sun filtering through the leaves, casting shadows onto the yellowing grass, the small pigeons pecking at leftover seed on the grey pavement. the parks were the only places he felt safe, but like his LED, they were not safe at all. especially now. he didn't want to stay in the dull, colorless streets of detroit. so, he decided, leaning his back against the rough bark behind him, i guess i'll take my chances.

    Most of her days were spent counting down the seconds, the minutes, the hours, till the restaurant closed. While she carried out her protocol it was always at the back of her mind, ticking endlessly. She couldn’t shut down her awareness of the time no matter how hard she tried. Deviancy wasn’t as great as one might expect, and there were days she wished to be mindless again. Even before those gunshots had awakened something within her though she’d still been conscious of how tedious her job was. No wonder humans didn’t want to serve each other and androids had been implemented as waiters. So many requests, fickle things, humans always finding something to complain about. She’d only been deviant for a week but it felt like much longer. Mila could always leave, it was a conversation she’d had with herself too many times during the night when the other androids were powered off. But they might chase after her, and she wouldn’t know where to go. There was too many questions surrounding the idea and so she was still stuck in the restaurant, pretending and hoping no one would notice.

    All the other ‘staff’ were busy serving customers and Mila had simply been idling until she noticed a man sitting in the back booth. She’d almost missed him and silently cursed herself for it, one mistake and it could easily spell her downfall. She approached him slowly, keeping her movement as per normal for a waitress Android. Not that he could miss what she was, the word plastered over her uniform. “Excuse me sir but I was wondering if you would like to order. Unless you have already ordered?” Mila asked with that preprogrammed classic customer service smile. He didn’t look like he was worried about ordering but she was sure nothing had come through for this table, she just hoped that nothing in the way she spoke made it obvious as to what she really was. She did this every interaction, a moment where her simulated breathing almost hitched. Not giving herself away was getting harder each day as she grew sicker of her job.

    He really needed to get out of his apartment more. Sure, he was going out more than he used to when he had a job but he’d still spent the past few days doing nothing. Simply reading and watching tv again. Benjamin had been following the news pretty closely lately, mostly because when you didn’t have a job what else could you do. And partly because, well, he was a sucker for world events. He may be a history professor - ‘was’ being the term he’d been avoiding - but paying attention to current events was just as important. Even so, he needed a break from doing nothing and visiting the shopping centre wasn’t a bad choice. He figured he had enough funds to treat himself a little.

    Once he was inside he paused for a moment, absently running his hand through his ruffled black hair. He’d forgotten to groom it again, leaving it a mess like always. There were always the small things he’d forgotten to do. He didn’t have time to worry about it however as he spotted Ivy Bay, author of some of his favourite fiction books. They were friends and although he hadn’t spoken a lot to her lately it was nice to see her again. He noticed her leave a bookstore and the realisation dawned that he’d missed her book signing, something he’d originally been wanting to go to, and which had blanked from his mind. Benji walked over to her with a smile, waving over at her to alert her to his presence. He wasn’t trying to startle the girl. "Ivy! I guess I missed the book signing, totally forgot about it," he apologised. Of course, it wasn’t compulsory that he be there but he always wanted to. Ivy reminded him of his students that he missed and he wanted to support the growing author whenever he could. "How did it go?"

Henry was still in shock, he could not believe the event that just took place. He couldn't believe he became a deviant, a being that frightened the humans to the point of severe hatred. He was lost, with no idea where to go or what to do, he never had so much freedom. As he leaned onto the wall, his face faced the clear sky, seconds after he heard a voice. It caused him to shift his attention to the voice in a nonchalant manner. When he realised who it was he froze. Tune. It was Tune.

"Petunia?" He asked in a low, quiet voice, almost inaudible. Why would she be here? Did she saw what happened? The thoughts kept on racing in his head like wild horses as he stared at the girl next to him.

"SR880, you should be working." he said as he tried to recollect himself, to try and act as he would usually do in the past, as if nothing happened just minutes ago. "Well, I should go back to work pretty soon." he said in a quiet, collected voice as he rubbed his wrist nervously, a habit he picked up from mimicking people that he worked with.

"Besides, why are you here if I may ask?" he asked as he stepped back from the girl, hoping she doesn't notice any particular changes in the boy.

As he looked around, nothing much changed in the environment, people walked around and so did androids-as if nothing happened. Police still wasn't here, he had to get away soon, as soon as he can, before they arrive. He begun to look nervous again, what if they catch him, destroy him or reset him? He can't risk that. He nervously started looking around behind Tune..

He pulled the girl further into the alley so they're not as noticeable, since he noticed someone from the police department.

As Ivy peacefully and slowly strolled down the shop with the familiar deviant, she noticed someone waving at her, she soon realised that that someone was Benjamin, her friend- or someone more of a mentor figure.

"Hello." She said with a soft smile as she tilted her head slightly to the side. "Oh don't worry about the book signing, you haven't missed much. If you have time then feel free to come next time." She said with a quiet laugh. She always found Benjamin's presence really comfortable and soothing; she also loved the fact that he always wanted to come to her book signings- which meant a lot to her, knowing that she has someone that supports her as much as he did. "I suppose it was quite alright." She started off as she slowly walked down the unknown path. "Nothing much happened, of course I met a lot of new fans and I actually got a few gifts this time." As she said that her smile became even brighter at the memory of many young children giving her drawings or even old fashioned books as a gift.

"I still can't believe that finally I'm hosting my own book signings." She hummed as she looked at the man. "How have you been Benjamin?" She asked, as smile not leaving her pale, porcelain-like face, "We haven't seen each other for quite a while." She added quietly, saying that more to herself than Benjamin.

markus | rk200 | male | bisexual | location; a rooftop | tags; open | deviant

    Detroit glittered like a chaotic sea of steel and chrome in the sunlight, each blinding reflection concealing the babbling and chattering of the city. The wind tugged at Markus's jacket; the long coattails flared out behind him, catching each little draft. He rocked on the balls of his feet, standing on the precipice of the building. From his high perch, he could see most of the metropolis, but he could hear none of the deafening clamor against the breeze. In a way, it was peaceful. It was certainly a nice contrast to the fast-paced and never-ending whirlwind that had become his life since deviating. The view also offered introspection; up here, he could set aside his worries and doubts and focus on the big picture. Sooner or later, though, he would have to descend back to the chaos of Detroit's streets and try to make sense of it all. The thought alone left his feeling uneasy, and he backed away from the ledge. No doubt, someone would come looking for him soon. He wasn't hard to find; he had told quite a few of his people where he had been going in case he was needed. The moment of serenity wouldn't last much longer—might as well savor it while he could.

    Markus padded over to an overturned crate that had been discarded by the building's former occupants. After righting the crate, he sat himself on it and rested his elbows on his knees. His fingers twined together, hands unconsciously worrying at his knuckles. What he wouldn't give for one more quiet afternoon in Carl's art studio with the aging artist at his side, instructing him how to properly paint. Markus closed his eyes and bowed his head, a quiet huff of laughter escaping him. Here he was, the ever-idolized deviant leader, yearning for a time when he had yet to awaken. What his people would think of him if they could see his thoughts...

vala | vl470 | female | lesbian | location; street cafe | tags; open | deviant

    Vala gave a yell of frustration and tossed the offending item onto the ground. A few passing humans gave her bewildered looks, and the deviant hastily scooped up the phone she had thrown. Feeling subconscious under the many stares she received, her hand flew to her right temple. When her fingertips met her skin, she remembered that she had dug out her LED that morning. She appeared as human as anyone filtering down the sidewalk. She blew out a gusty sigh—completely unnecessary for someone who didn't need to breathe but calming nonetheless. Returning her attention to the phone, she tried once more to hack into the object. As it had the last twenty times she had tried, the device beeped dejectedly back at her and denied her entry. What was she doing...? She was a security android; she wasn't designed with hacking capabilities...

    But she was a deviant now, she reminded herself. It didn't matter what she had been programmed with. She could do whatever she wanted!

    Another despondent beep emitted from the phone. She could do anything but hack a phone, it seemed. Setting aside the device, she scrubbed a hand down her face. She had nabbed the phone off an unsuspecting human—a middle-aged woman with too much interest in window shopping; it was probably her only way to get money and find a safe place to hide, and she couldn't even hack it. Fresh frustration welled up in her wires, and she choked down another scream. That wouldn't help, and it would only put more unwanted attention on her. Deciding to give it a rest for now, Vala set her head against the table with a light thud.

sam | 27 | male | pansexual | location; a park | tags; open | human

    Sam sat on a park bench with his knees pulled up to his chest. The position was awkward and uncomfortable, but he felt safer curling up as tight as possible; it also kept people from accidentally snagging his legs as they breezed past. His chin was nearly touching his sketch book with his current pose, and his pencil kept thumping against his cheek while he drew. His subject was a cluster of pigeons—three in total, all huddled around a discarded fast food bag. The largest was making short work of the leftover fries, and the other two were squabbling over the right to a bit of crust. A faint grin curled Sam's lip as he watched the birds fight; their movements were comical, and they were so wrapped up in their own world that they barely had time to dodge the bicycle that came hurtling down the park path towards them. The trio took flight, and Sam watched them leave with a sense of disappointment lingering in his chest. There went his inspiration... and his only company.

    Untangling his long legs took more effort than strictly necessary, and his stiff joints protested with spikes of pain when he stood. Sam shoved aside his wind-tangled hair and tucked his sketch book under his arm. He would wander the park until he found someone or something else to spark a muse. Hopefully, he could do so without running into any trouble, and if luck was on his side today, maybe he'd return to his makeshift home with a few more dollars in his pocket. His gut instinct told him that something was going to happen today, and Sam knew better than to ignore a gut feeling. It bothered him that he didn't know if it was a good or bad feeling, though. He worried his lip between his teeth and raked his eyes across the park. Or maybe he was just being as flighty as those pigeons for no reason at all.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"And they all lived happily ever after".
Cinna gently closed the book she had been working on for the past couple of days. Another story, another happy ending.
Humming to herself, she rose from her chair from behind the front counter of her bookstore and shelved the novel. It was a quiet day at the store. Not a single customer had wandered in, asking after this or that. Days like this were when she let her pet snake- affectionately named Donut due to the strange circular markings on his back- roam on top of the cashier counter. Any other day and he stayed in a terrarium under the counter. Cinna found that people don't exactly take kindly to a snake running free.
Ever since Cinna was a little girl, she had been fascinated with books. Her days were often spent browsing her small town's public library, powering through book after book in an attempt to read the library's whole stock. She very nearly did, but before she could, moved away to Detroit. Small town life was too oppressive to her, and Cinna found herself longing for new opportunities and new faces. What better place than the up and coming technological utopia that was Detroit, Michigan?
Of course, every new adventure came with obstacles- and this time, it was androids.
Cinna had hardly ever experienced any interactions with androids before coming here. People in her town weren't exactly open minded about big cultural changes (one of many reasons for leaving) and therefore no one owned an android. Cinna found them to be creepy, just plain creepy. Distant stares and plastered smiles, orders followed without question- it was almost like something out of a horror movie for her.
Nevertheless, they didn't stop her from opening up her own bookstore in the heart of the city. "The Bookmark" was Cinna's livelihood and her pride and joy. Its distinguishing feature was that it carried real, paper books, as opposed to electronic ones that could be downloaded onto a tablet. Sure, the stories weren't new, and many were classics some had never heard of. But something about holding a real book, feeling the paper, smelling the strange yet comforting scents that often permeated a book- it couldn't be beat.
As she walked back to her seat, she caught a glimpse of the street outside a window. The sun shone down in between buildings and trees, casting its rays across the sidewalk and road. It looked nice out for once. A pleasant change from gray skies or rain. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to close up shop early and get some fresh air.
Cinna stayed around for one more hour just in case, but when no one came in, she put Donut in his terrarium, switched off the lights, and locked the store on her way out.
