Re: Tortallan Rp - Queen's Riders - (medieval fantasy/horses

Location: Great Road East, heading to Corus.

The six members of the Sixth Riders Group, also known as Thayet's Dogs, rode quietly along the worn dirt road of the Great Road East. The Group Commander Briar of Whitehorn rode at the head, dark eyes scanning ahead of the group of any danger. No one expected any here, as the road was always traveled, but it could happen. Looking down, she barely smiled, seeing that her strong pony was still going, even after such a long way. The grey-speckled mare was almost considered a horse, but was just half a hand too small.

The Sixth was heading back to Corus after a month-long ride through the country. Along the way the performed the duties of any rider group by reaching areas of battle before the main army could, or just helping small fiefs along the way, and teaching villagers and farmers how to fight. During the month, they had lost two from the group, both killed in battle. The ponies of the deceased pulled the cart that held their dead and covered bodies so they could be buried with honor in Corus.

Kael Hobbes rode alongside his comrades, thinking about his fallen friends who lay in the cart. His heart felt heavy from the loss; Carter and Sonja had been fine warriors, and fairly decent barmates. Carter had been a lightweight, but good entertainment and Kael hadn't minded losing coin to the cheerful lad at cards. Sonja had been the stern, motherly sort, and had gotten both him and Carter out of more than a few jams. To have lost them both one after the other made everything surreal...

He gripped the reins of his bay gelding and rose upright in the saddle, giving himself a mental shake and pushing such thoughts from his mind. It didn't do to dwell on such things while on the road.

Sighing very softly as the memories of the battle that killed her companions crept in, Briar reached up with one leather gloved hand to rub at her eyes with a thumb and forefinger. No on in the Sixth had been in good spirits since they lost two of their own. The Riders were like a family, and each group was even closer. They lived, worked, relaxed, and sometimes even died together. Losing two of such a small group was a large blow, one that dampened everyone's moral.

Looking along the road ahead, Briar tried to meditate a bit atop her pony, trying to clear her mind of such depressing thoughts. She reminded herself that the Riders would be getting a new group of trainees this season, which was always a good thing. Half always succeeded, sometimes more, so the two lost in the Sixth would be replaced with new Riders by the end of the year.

Kael's cobalt eyes scanned the clouded sky momentarily as he hoped that it didn't signify coming rain. The laidback rider did not relish the idea of dealing with the cart should it get stuck. He grimaced and returned his gaze to the forefront, his eyes resting on the back of the Group Commander. He forced a smile, "Hey, Briar. What are you going to do when we get back to Corus? You have any special plans?" He had a fine tenor voice which currently held a somewhat playful tone, Kael intent on at least trying to lighten the mood.

Hearing a voice suddenly, Briar blinked the listlessness from her eyes and looked back to the young man on the pony behind her. She forced a smile, though it was weak and obviously unhappy. "Plans? No. We're getting some new recruits within the next week and Evin wants me to help him and Sarge this year." She turned her attention forward again, though continued to speak. "So any plans I may have had have gone out the window. Oh well; 'tis the life of a Rider."

Kael's smile was replaced by a look of mock dismay, followed by a chuckle, "Trainees? Sounds like you got your work cut out for you. Try not to break them, Briar." He thought back to his days as a rider-in-training and chuckled once more, remembering his own training. It would be rough... but those that made it through would definitely be better for the experience they gained from it.

Smirking a bit though he couldn't see it, she chuckled. "Nah, breaking them isn't my job. That would be Sarge's." She looked back as well at her own trainee days six years ago. Sarge had been the Training Master even then, and he hadn't changed a bit. He was still the large, black, intimidating, hard man he'd always been, but even for all this, he was fair. Even if a recruit was not doing well, he'd push them if they were trying and giving it their all. Never before had a recruit been turned away if they weren't good enough, because time and effort gave them the skills they needed.

Hearing the chuckle, Kael grinned broadly, happy to have at least gotten something out of the commander, and nodded softly, "I guess you're right. Maybe I'll stop by sometime while you're training them and lend a hand." Despite the loss of his friends, Kael suddenly found himself feeling a bit excited about the new recruits. Fresh faces always made work more enjoyable, and sometimes they even managed to make it more interesting.
