Maple nodded slowly. Scarlet's only known predecessors were her cousin Blake and her brother Cobalt. Both were traitorous, and both were killed by the Adamson of their year. Unlike them, Scarlet seemed loyal. She seemed very high-strung, though, like Clair. The girl from District Four was incredibly friendly and outgoing, to the point of it being abnormal. She seemed to accept everything with a smile. Clair wasn't afraid to die, and Maple saw many different outcomes of this situation.
Of course, now wasn't the time for such useless thoughts. Maple did not suspect an issue, but if it happened, she could deal with it efficiently. Right now it was time for planning other things. An alliance needed to work together, to pick the same prey to hunt.
Maple took a piece of paper from a nearby shelf, then reached for a pencil. She printed the word 'TARGETS' at the top of the sheet. Maple's writing was easy to distinguish from her siblings' penmanship. Rowan's was flowing and extravagant, Willow's was sharp and crooked, and Olive printed big, curvy block letters. On the other hand, Maple's writing was clean and bold. No unnecessary flourishes like Rowan, no violent scribbling like Willow.
In silence, she handed the pencil to Leo for him to jot down some victims.
Sally, of course, was blushing like a maniac. Ally had her by the hand, and her fellow queen was so incredibly attractive. Even for someone as amazing and perfect as the great Sally herself, Ally was completely irresistable. "I think we should lead them all straight into Clair Grant," she giggled maliciously. Sally couldn't wait to see the rebels punished.
Frank's smile faltered for a second under Bella's intense stare. He often enjoyed looking at her, but now it was beginning to get freaky. I hope she isn't planning to kill me, he thought fearfully. She seemed to be a little too intently focused on his face...
The idiot was lost again. He was the dumbest blonde in history, seriously. Cole and Lewis were probably planning a great prank without him, and Willow was going to slap him silly when he got back to class. He would be late, and when the tardy bell rang, so would the sound of a slap hitting him square across the face. He was still smiling, though, because it was fun being lost. It was like a game, one of those maze games. He thought he was pretty good at those.
There was one game he definitely wasn't good at, though. In fact, he was so bad at it, he knew he was going to lose from the start. But he didn't want to be a sore loser -- pun intended -- so he chose to be checkmated by a particular graceful winner.
He was actually smiling as he thought of this ridiculous analogy. He was a pretty ridiculous person, after all. And now that he needn't be afraid of death any longer, he was even more carefree.
Maybe too carefree, because he walked right into someone.
"Oh, I am so sorry," he stammered, taking a step back. For a second he was stunned silent. He had never seen this girl before, but she was so beautiful, this had to be some kind of dream. "I'm Ed," he said, trying to play it cool. "Are you the square root of negative one? Because you can't be real."
