History: Orpheus was born in the years of Julius Caesar’s dictatorship, and as a boy and young man quickly became involved in politics and government. At the age of fifteen, he murdered his father Atilius and took his position as Commander of a large unit of the Roman empire’s army. He became a firm and rather clandestine military advisor of Julius Caesar at the height of his power, and towards the end of his reign, became Julius’s “puppet master”, making him into more of a Roman icon, a figure head. Orpheus became the eyes and ears of Julius’s empire, and noticed among his court a strange man who called himself “Amare Domitianus”. He made investigations into this peculiar man and his connection to Julius; the result of which was in Orpheus discovering Amare’s elixir, which he had left exposed in a moment of forgetfulness. Orpheus drank the elixir and became immortal, then bringing Amare before him to sentence him to his punishment. When Amare revealed that an immortal must continue to drink the elixir in order to keep living, Orpheus demanded that Amare tell him how to obtain the elixir, but Amare would not; he instead said he would bring the elixir to Orpheus himself. When Orpheus threatened to have Amare executed if he did not reveal himself, Amare pointed out that if he died or passed into the Shadowlands, so did Orpheus loose the key to immortality. At an impasse, Amare became Orpheus’s servant, bringing him the elixir as often as he needed it, and in return for Amare’s secret being kept, he aided Orpheus in all his deeds, which included the Ides of March. All of this changed many years later, however, when Amare fell in love with a young French maiden by the name of Gabrielle. Orpheus exploited Amare’s love for Gabrielle, imprisoning her and threatening the violent end to her life if Amare did not reveal how to make the elixir. Amare consented. Orpheus also forbade Amare to make the elixir himself anymore; he now had to rely on Orpheus to supply his immortality, for the price of Amare’s services and in return for Gabrielle’s continued safety. By the time of Gabrielle’s death in the 1400’s, Amare had completely forgotten how to make the elixir himself; he was now entirely reliant on Orpheus for his livelihood, and after centuries of servitude and the crushing death of his Gabrielle, had forgotten to question Orpheus’s rule over him. For centuries Amare has been doing Orpheus’s work, and just as he has begun to break free of him, Orpheus has threatened the life of someone else close to Amare; that of the ex-pirate, Jacky Fabor.
