Dipper was having a good old fashioned freak out, but in his own logical way. He spent about thirty seconds pacing rapidly, thinking about what he should do. Go to the shack, or try to find reception... Neither choice was more probable than the other. He decided on the shack, and ran as fast as his awkward legs could take him. Because of his introversion and study-oriented nature, he wasn't exactly athletically inclined. It took him forever to get to the shack, at which point he was too out of breath to make a coherent call to emergency services. Good choice, Dip. He went upstairs to his sister and nearly collapsed, breathing, "Mabel!" between gasps of breath. It was obvious that something was wrong.
In Dip's extended absence - it took him, like, ten to fifteen minutes to get back to the shack; he's not fast and the cross-country setting just made it worse - a certain guy seemed to stumble upon the predicament. Walter gazed down into the hole at Sofie, and said, "Oh, young lady. Pardon me, I hope I'm not interrupting anything important." He didn't know, maybe this girl had a hobby for hanging out under rocks. "But I must inquire; are you currently, or have you ever been a ghost, poltergeist, spirit, or residential energy?"
"He didn't want to believe.
He wanted to know." [Carl Sagan]
