Asha Taphenah
Name:
Asha Taphenah
Age:
22
Gender:
Although Asha's gender expression tends to be more feminine, they've decided they are essentially gender neutral. Since most people tend to think of them as female, they'll offer both she/her and they/them as their pronouns of choice.
Your character's hopes about the Shaman Fight:
Asha hopes that the shaman who overthrows Pliea will be someone reasonable and kind, hopefully someone whom they would have connections with. They hope that the Shaman Fight itself will revive a spirit of rebellion in the shaman community in the form of togetherness rather than rivalry. And ultimately, what they hope for from the outcome of the Shaman Fight is for someone to come to power who will listen to both humans and shamans alike and be wise enough to find a balance between these two very different communities.
Appearance:
Asha is a shortish Patch member with a rounded nose, long dark hair and relaxed gestures. Their high, clean brow and matt lips yield an certain gracefulness and curiosity to their features. Despite the many restraints and complications of living under Pliea's rule in Tokyo, Asha always appears a healthy, plump young person. Their tall oval face is never seen without some amount of makeup, a feat which they manage mostly with makeshift equipment; their dark brown eyes are almost permanently framed with eyeliner and they continue to use the Patch's geometric face paints from time to time. They also take the utmost care of the single pair of rimless glasses, carefully saving them along with other precious accessories from a time past: a small collection of necklaces, earrings and rings, airplane earbuds stolen from an abandoned purse and a large bottle of French perfume, probably gone bad. Like most of their belongings, Asha's clothes are all slipped from the homes of Tokyo residents having left the region in a hurry. Nicer outfits more fitting to their round figure they trade for their programming skills with other scavengers.
Abilities:
Asha's main strength lies in their broad knowledge of human technology and in the fact that shamans, now more powerful than ever, still refuse to take interest in the subject. While they do specialize in the once flourishing but now very limited field of computer sciences and programming, it's the young programmer's habit of looking to understand how objects and systems outside of the spiritual world function which makes them able to reuse and remodel discarded human technology to their advantage in a way that shamans rarely envisage. They gain information and make profit from hacking and tampering with the remainders of the human world. Their services and projects such as the creation of discreet communication devices and encryption, reverse engineering the communication protocols used by Pliea's networks, falsifying data to enable illicit activity or deriving electricity from one place to another when needed are then traded off or shared with other people for food, water or electricity in the manner of a small business.
Their shamanic skills —although good— are rusty, and they try to avoid meddling with spirits as much as possible. However, times have made it obvious that the key to success is in a mix of both human and spiritual knowledge, and only recently with the start of the Shaman Fight have they started conjuring up old memories of their Patch education and attempting to plug them into their computers and programs. They're even starting to think of bonding with a spirit if required for the duration of the Shaman Fight, a decision which goes against most of their lifestyle choices thus far.
Personality:
Though they have never experienced a time before Pliea's tyrannical grip on the world, Asha is convinced that the past was a better, safer world than this one. Despite being a member of the Patch tribe, they feel much closer to this ideal of the human-ruled past for its spirit of progress and will to connect people than to the mindset of shamanic communities, which they find too traditional and narrow minded. While fully respecting the spiritual matters of the world, they'd like to live a life uninvolved with shamanism, something which Pliea's being the Shaman Queen makes practically impossible. In fact, a large number of Asha's attitudes they imposes upon themselves because of the context of Pliea's rule. While generally more introverted in nature, they require of themselves to go towards other people, forming alliances and connections, staying in contact and forming networks of acquaintances. This makes them come off a surprising mixture of friendly and formal, both joking and professional and constantly down to earth even in situations with the tone of companionship. On top of this, Asha is talkative; they discuss whenever people are around for them to listen to, share each and every one of their thoughts out loud be it to an audience or simply to their computer screen. What their clients and friends appreciate about them is their patience and composure paired with the fact that this never translated as coldness from their part but as well needed support. Asha appreciates their role as a useful part of people's lives, be it as a friend or as a business partner and hopes to continue that kind of dynamic even in the possibility of Pliea being overthrown.
Where they are from:
Asha was raised by the Patch, but ultimately came to live a very different life from them, ending up in Tokyo for the start of the Shaman Fight. They went through all of the Patch tribe's ritual training on the art of shamanism during their childhood and early adolescence. While they did not lack skill in the subject, they chose instead to focus their interest on the decayed human world and its technology. Looking to teach themselves programming from a young age they came into contact with a community of computer scientists attempting to carry on the subject and making use of shamans' lack of understanding of technology to exist unnoticed by Pliea's government. Slowly straying away from the Patch way of life, Asha made friends with humans on one side and shamans on the other, attempting whenever possible to conciliate the two when they clashed. By the time they reached 20 their network had gone from recreational programming to offering organized help to those in need. Hearing of the hardships of those still living Tokyo and interested in the technological vestiges of the region, they moved to Japan five years before the beginning of the Shaman Fight. They integrated the Japanese underground community with relative ease, quickly learning Japanese while retaining a notoriously heavy American accent. They now live east of Tokyo with their girlfriend, a delivery and transportation girl, by converting abandoned homes into their living quarters and offering their respective services to populations and Shaman Fight contestants in the city outskirts.

Bastet, fur ruffling from the spread of Komo's wings, had trotted over to the dragon's side and jumped onto her student's lap, interrupting her as she chuckled. Now with their ride's large claws leaving the hill, she started glaring at the other passengers, stung with no real seriousness."I heard that!" she called from her spot behind the slicing wind as they started their ascension, "and yes I am as salty as ever congratulations!" But her tiny diamond teeth fell immediately into her jaw as Komo thrust himself out of the air right into the sky. Arisu gasped, torn from her long gaze at the departing ground past Komo's flank and almost clutched at her golden spirit. Instead, her hands caught thorns and her face pushed into the draping wind, laughing her throat into its nudging current.
Already, one sky was beginning to bleed into the next, purpling through the skyline from beneath its crenelated edges. Arisu felt the idea of cold being pressed into her skin by the dying dark. It seemed the night was blending the world's lines even more pressingly within its last instants.
From her wind-trembled lap, Bastet called an answer to the question which rattled Komo's armor. "Head for Saitama district first!" She offered. "Check the bathhouse!" Arisu pulled hair from under her nose and added, "also try to avoid the business district, the imperial gardens and the docks!" attempting to channel her voice outwards through her spine. "Those were taken over by Pliea! They're full of her underlings! And they don't like their activities being meddled with!"
